SiOK QUESTIONNAIRE AND DIVERSITY OF OTHER METHODS

FOR MEASURING ORGANISATIONAL CLIMATE

  • PROBLEM DEFINITION:

Organisational climate is one of the elements of the organisation. It refers to the employees contentment with the place where they work. Regarding the organisational climate we can e.g. study the relations of the superior with their employees, relations between the employees, satisfaction with the salary and rewards, and also the way of solving problems. There are different methods in measuring organisational climate. The most commonly used is the quantitative method of researching with questionnaires. In our seminar work we will present different methods and will focus on the SiOK questionnaire and compare it with other methods. Our goal will be the examination of dimensions which measure emloyees' contentment and the comparison of two methods, their relevance and defectiveness.

For the empirical part of our seminar work we have decided to analyse the SiOK questionnaire and to focus on questions about the employees' contentment. Consequently we will research its relavance and defectiveness. Further on we will try to find out some solutions or examples which could improve the method. We will also compare the SiOK questionnaire with another quantitative method and will examine whether the qualitative analysis is perhaps more relavant for measuring the organisational climate. Since we assume that the SiOK questionnaire is not a relevant method, we have decided to make an interview with dr. Lipičnik who is a critic of the SiOK questionnaire.

  • HYPOTHESES

  1. The quantitative method is not adequate for measuring organisational climate.
  2. The SiOK questionnaire does not give relavant data for finding employees' contentment with their work.
  3. The SiOK questionnaire is not accurate enough, it does not bring relavant results/data and it should therefore be changed.
  4. With the SiOK questionnaire we can not measure satisfaction of employees in the organisation.

  • WORKING QUESTIONS

  1. What is organisational climate? What methods measure it?
  2. What influences on organisational climate?
  3. What are the dimensions of organisational climate?
  4. What is the SiOK questionnaire?
  5. What are dimensionas of the SiOK guestionnaire? How is it divided?
  6. Can the SiOK questionnaire be used to improve organisational climate?
  7. What kind of questionnaire is used in foreign countries?
  8. Analysis of Lipičnik and Mayer's critique of the SiOK questionnaire: what are they focused on?

Discussion of issues

Issue 1: NAME OF THE GROUP

Decision 1: We met in the library and we have decided on the name of our group. Now we are named 4FUN

Issue 2: TOPIC

Maruša: Our general topic was flexibility and commitment to organisation.

From here on we decided to focus on one of the forms of flexible work and that is teleworking and commitment to organisation.

We will study some developmental centers which are in different parts in Slovenia. We discussed with our tutor prof. dr. Mesner Andolšek and she gave us some directions and told us which  the appropriate literature is. Just do not forget to make a contact with the people who we talked about when we had a meeting. Have motivation and fun - hard at the beginning but easier later on.

Maruša: NEW TOPIC - We had a meeting in the library and we found out that most (except one) developmental centers do not have teleworking.

And also flexible work is not so developed in Slovenia, so we anyway sent our concept to dr. Jana Nadoh Bergoč but we have chosen another topic - Organisational climate and we will focus on the SIOK questionnaire and measures and we will write another concept till Wednesday.

I researched a bit on the Internet and here are some useful links to get to know more about the SIOK questionnaire and measures:

Urška: Hey! I see you've already done quite a search about the topic. I have a suggestion related to our new topic Organizational climate (which I find even more interesting): We could do an empirical research on the example of Kolektor Group (http://www.kolektor.si/) that is near my hometown and I would be able to contact them. Just a suggestion. Leave another comment in case you have some suggestions/opinion Now let's get to work and search some literature

Maruša: Hi! I looked at the link that you have written for the Kolektor Group and i find it really interesting. The company is really developed, has some importanat certificates for quality (ISO), awards...which can also affect on climate of organisation and so on. We need to make a new concept and then discuss with our tutor about the new topic to see what her point of view is. Otherwise the idea for empirical research

is really good.

Urška: So Jana Nadoh B. gave us another opportunity to write a concept on the topic of organizational climate. More detailed information on Wednesday...I suggest we search a few articles and more specifically define our problem. As posted before, I suggested the case of Kolektor Group which was included in the SiOK questionnaire.

Please leave a comment if you agree with that so we could go on with searching the specific literature

Manca: well done girls. i find this topic very interesting too. but do not forget that it is not decided yet if we can change the topic. i hope that Jana Nadoh Bergoč will let us change it. i really hope she will, cause if not i am afraid we will have a break down. i agree with Urška. i think that the company she has found is good and it is included in the SIOK questionnaire which is even better. so let cross our fingers that our tutors will listen to our request. i will start looking for the literature and working on our new concept. see you on tuesday. bye.

Maruša: hello! i found some literature - more specific one -) (more about this at our meeting which will be on tuesday??) and also have proposition for our title of the seminar work - since we are dealing with the SiOK questionnaire and measures for organisational climate i suggest something related to it. i know that we are still not sure about having a new topic but are expecting a positiva response.

so, a diversity of methods in measuring organisational climate as a way of understanding organizational dynamics in organisations.

Manca: hy i found some interesting articles about our new topic (well it is not actually decided if we have a new topic, but we hope we do). so here are the articles. if you do not agree with these articles, pose your comments as soon as possible. bye.

-toward  an understanding of  ethical climate

-assessing the organizational climate and contractual relationship for perceptions of support for innovation

-the role of climate and socialization in developing  interfunctional  coordination

-organizational climate and occupational health outcomes in hospital nurses

Nataša: ok i think i managed to add a comment. i admit i'm not a computer person. so this is just a test, so i can se how this stuff works. i hope that our second topic will be ok. we'll found this out tomorrow. nice day girls!

Maruša: So now things are finally getting better. We have a new topic and things are progressing quite well. Just keep up the spirit

Anja: Hey, right now me and nataša are working on our research questions, I hope we will manage to get good resarch questions so tomorow we can discuss them with Jana Nadoh.

Manca: hi. this weekend i will work on my assignment and will try to find as many authors who criticised the SiOK questionnaire as possible, and will also try to find other questionnaires which are simmilar to SiOK, but maybe better and are trying to discover things in an organiation in another way, maybe with different methods.

Anja: Hi, Urška also said that she found something about other methods which are used for measuring organizational climate. Maruša when are you going to ask Lipičnik, if he will cooperate with us? I will try to find something more about Mayer, ok?

Maruša: Hi there, first I will go through the things/elements that Lipičnik wrote in his critique - well just to get more information and after that I will contact him. It is not a problem since I visit his classes at the Faculty of Economics. Will try to do my best.

Nataša: Hi! it's great that Maruša has classes at the Faculty of Economics, so it would be easier for us to get to dr. Lipičnik. During this week I will try to find out something about SiOK, maybe if it's mantioned in foreign litetature or articles. Now, it's time for me to catch some sunshine... as you can see, I have some technical problems... please if one of you could fix this.

Urška: Hey! Today I found an article about qualitative method for measuring organizational climate - it is about 2 other methods beside questionnaries. Just to let you know :)see you tomorrow.

Minutes of the meeting »Problem Based Learning Project«
held on 1 March, 2007 at FDV library

Present: Manca Štanta, Maruša Špitalar, Anja Jerković, Nataša Levart, Urška Ogrič

Agenda:

1. Defining the problem (empirical part)
2. Tasks for the next meeting
3. Any other business (next meeting)

Item 1:

Discussion:

Maruša presented a possibility of methodological studying of the SiOK questionnaire with comparison to other methods of measuring. Urška suggested a company for the empirical part of research. Manca suggested that we should make a contact with them as soon as possible. We all agreed. Anja suggested some Internet sources related to the SiOK questionnaire. Nataša proposed a few scientific articles related to the problem. Anja disliked some of them.

Decision:

Our problem is:  Methods of Measuring the organizational climate.

Item 2

Discussion:

Manca suggested that each of us should find at least 4 working questions and 2 hypotheses until the next week. Nataša agreed and added that each member should send their hypotheses and working questions to Manca's e-mail. Urška suggested we should define a deadline for sending e-mails to Manca. Maruša suggested that this task should be carried out in the next 3 days. We all agreed.

Decision:
In the next 3 days each member will send 2 hypotheses and 4 working questions to Manca.

Item 3:
Discussion:
We discussed the time and the day of our next meeting. Anja suggested we could meet on Tuesday at the library. Other members agreed.
Decision:
The next meeting will be held on Tuesday, March 6th at 12 AM at the library.

Minutes of the meeting »Problem Based Learning Project«

held on 8 March, 2007 at FDV library

Present: Anja Jerković, Nataša Levart, Urška Ogrič, Manca Štanta, Maruša Špitalar

Agenda:

1. Hypotheses and working questions

2. Discussion on our empirical work

3. Any other business

Item 1: Hypotheses and work questions

Discussion:

After we had read the literature and looked up the SiOK page, each of us suggested two hypotheses and four working questions. Then we decided to take three best hypotheses and seven working questions, which were the most appropriate for our topic. Manca suggested that we should talk about our hypotheses with our mentor dr. Dana Mesner-Andolšek, so we talked with her and she agreed with our suggestions of the hypotheses.

Item 2: Our empirical work

Discussion:

We had a few problems with the decision on our empirical work. So Anja and Nataša decided that we should include a company in our project. But Urška said that she is not very happy about that because this would take us too much time. She was right because Jana Nadoh Bergoč told us the same. So we decided to focus basically on the SiOK, without including a company in our project.

Decision:

Our empirical work will focus on the SiOK questionnaire which will be compared with other similar methods that are used for measuring organizational climate.

Assignments:

Anja and Nataša will search for more information about the SiOK.

Urška and Manca will try to find other questionnaires and methods for measuring organizational climate.

Maruša will contact dr. Bogdan Lipičnik because he researched the Siok.

Manca will also write an e-mail to Dana Mesner-Andolšek, because she promised us more literature for our project.

Item 3: Any other business

Nataša proposed that our meeting should be held every week at the same time. So we chose Thursdays at 10 am.

Decision:

At our next meeting we will distribute assignments, so we can continue working on our project.

The next meeting will be held on Thursday, 15 March, 2007 at 10 AM at FDV library.

Minutes of the meeting »Problem Based Learning Project«

held on 15 March, 2007 at FDV library

Present: Anja Jerković, Nataša Levart, Urška Ogrič, Manca Stanta, Maruša Špitalar

 Agenda:

1. Distribution of tasks

2. Discussion on our empirical work

3. Any other business

Item 1: New material

Discussion:

Our meeting started and each of us showed to the others what they had found and done in the past week. Urška found an interesting article about other methods for measuring organizational climate. We all agreed that we should focus more on the SiOK questionnaire because we do not have enough material. We also need to read more literature on organizational climate or satisfaction with work.

Decision:

Each of us will find new material for our project.

Item 2: Distribution of tasks

Discussion:

We had a few problems with the distribution of tasks. We discovered that we have to study the SiOK questionnaire and also other methods, so we can find out which methods are better for measuring organizational climate, particularly satisfaction with work, because organizational climate is a wide topic. We decided that we should continue working on the assignments from the last week.

Assignments:

Urška and Manca will focus on other questionnaires and methods for measuring organizational climate, so we can compare them with the SiOK questionnaire.

Maruša will prepare questions and have an interview with dr. Bogdan Lipičnik who had worked extensively on the SiOK questionnaire. This will help us later on when we compare the SiOK questionnaire with other methods for measuring organizational climate.

Anja and Nataša will find more about satisfaction with and at work and look up for the SiOK questionnaire. They will try to find as many questions as possible that the SiOK deals with.

Item 3: Any other business

Discussion:

We agreed that we have to meet with our mentor dr. Dana Mesner-Andolšek, so we can see if we are progressing well and maybe she can give us some good advice. Next week it will not be easy because we also have other things to do at the universtity but we decided that we will meet anyway, just to see what we found and discussed it.

Decision:

At our next meeting we will put together everything that what we found so far. We will also contact dr. Dana Mesner-Andolšek as soon as she returns from abroad.

The next meeting will be held on Thursday, 22 March 2007 at 10 AM at FDV library.

Agenda:

  1. Action – item follow up
  2. Distribution of tasks
  3. Any other business

1. Action – item follow up:

All assignments from previous meeting of our group were successfully completed.

2. Distribution of tasks:

Discussion:

All the members of our group came on our meeting in FDV library. Urška let us know that she is progressing with her analyse of the SiOK questionnaire quite well. Maruša already did her task. She went to dr .Lipičnik and had an interview, and also wrote everything on a paper. Manca suggested to contact also dr. Mayer, another critic of the SiOK questionnaire. We all agreed because it would be useful to do the comparison with dr. Lipičnik facts. Anja and Nataša said that they are researching on the best literature to get general facts of organisational climate. Anja also reminded us that we should search for other methods for measuring organisational climate.

Decision:

Manca and Maruša will contact dr. Mayer and research a little bit more on the critic of the SiOK questionnaire. Anja and Nataša will find the most relevant material about organisational climate. Urška will write about the SiOK questionnaire. On our next meeting we will put everything together.

3. Any other business:

Discussion:

We all agreed that since there is not so much time left we should go to our tutor, Dana Mesner -Andolšek, and show her what we wrote so far. To ger her point of view on our work done so far and to get a feedback if we are on the right way.

Decision:

On our next meeting we will put all our things together in one seminary paper and we will go to our tutor on Thursday.

Our next meeting will be held on Wednesday 11/4/2007 at 1 pm at FDV library.
