TOPIC: CHILD LABOUR

TITLE: CONTINUOUS EXPLOITATION OF CHILD LABOUR IN SOUTH ASIA

DEFINITION:

Exploitation of child labour was not produced by a modern society, however it still remains one of the unsolved problems in our time.

International labour organization (ILO) has recently found out that there are round 246 million children aged 5 – 17 years in the world who are involved in child labour and are doing work which is not good for their mental, physical and emotional development. That means that those children are child labourers and are instead of going to school forced to work in factories and fields, to mine, sew footballs and t- shirts, even fight in wars.

These children are forced into working because their survival and survival of their families depend on it. They are trapped in poverty and they see no escape from it.

Although the total elimination of child labour is a long-term goal in many, especially developing countries, the worst forms of child labour, must be confronted immediately. These forms of child labour include trafficking, slavery, sexual exploitation and hazardous work.

In our seminar paper we will focus on the exploitation of child labour in South Asia, because in this area the exploitatio n of child labour still presents a big issue.  The absolute number of economically active children aged 5 – 14 years, is approximately 21.6 millions of total 300 million children of the same age.

MINUTES:

MINUTES OF THE FIRST MEETING OF »ADAM AND EVE« GROUP FOR THE PBL PROJECT

held on 8 March 2010, at FDV

Present: Tjaša, Katjuša, Janja

Absent: Blaž

Agenda:

1. Topic discussion and selection

2. Defining problem

3. Finding sources and literature

4. Any other business

ITEM 1

Discussion: The key point of our first meeting was finding a title for our seminar paper. One week ago our group decided that our topic could be »Child labour«, but we needed a more specific topic. Katjuša suggested that we could focus on the exploitation of child labour in South Asia, where this problem seems to be the biggest.

Decision: We decided that our topic will be »Even in the 21st century there seems to be no end to the exploitation of child labour in South Asia«.

ITEM 2

Discussion: We defined the problem about our topic.

Decision: We decided that we will talk about developed countries and Asian developing countries which are deliberately impeding repression over exploitation of child labour, because of child labour they have short- and long-term benefits. We decided we will also talk about current financial and economic crisis, that we suppose leads to an increase in child labour. We will be also talking about Slovenia, and will try to find out if its law banning child labour serves it's purpose.

ITEM 3

Discussion: We discussed about literature and sources for our project. Tjaša suggested that until next meeting, we should find literature for our seminar paper.

Decision: We decided that all members of our group will try to find suitable literature and other sources for our project and bring their list to the next meeting.

ITEM 4

Discussion: We were talking about the date of our next meeting, where our further assignments will be distributed. Janja suggested that we could meet on Thursday.

Decision: We decided that our next meeting will be held on Thursday, 18 March 2010, at 12:00, in Fdv library.

Picture 2

ITEM 1

Discussion: We all have done our assignments from our previous meeting in an appropriate way, but our leader, Katjuša, suggested it could be better that we are more responsible with our assignments for this project and we stick to the deadlines.

Decision: We decided we will meet the deadlines set by the group in a more responsible way, will successfully carry out our tasks and will be prepared to cooperate at any time.

  ITEM 2

Discussion: We were discussing about our research questions, hypotheses, for our project, that will help us identify what we need to find out in our research. Blaž suggested that our first research question, hypothesis, should be the research about developed countries and Asian developing countries, that are deliberately impeding repression over exploitation of child labour because in short- and in long- term they both benefit from it. Tjaša proposed that as our second hypothesis we should write about current economic and financial crisis that as we assume  leads to increasing of child labour. Katjuša suggested that as our research question we should also find out if in Slovenia law banning child labor serves its purpose.

Decision: We decided our seminar paper will be based on three research questions, that is, a hypothesis about benefits from child labour, a hypothesis about current economic and financial crisis that leads in increase of child labour, and finally a hypothesis about Slovenian law concerning child labour serves its purpose.

  ITEM 3

Discussion: We were also discussing about ten working questions, that should lead us to the solution of the problem and could help us identify what to do to solve our problem. Katjuša  had already written all working questions, so we only had to discuss how to distribute the tasks. Katjuša suggested she should focus on the definition of child labour, also on Slovenian law and if this law serves its purpose. Blaž was willing to write about child labour in South Asia today, focusing especially on developing Asian countries that are supposingly deliberately impending repressions over exploitation of child labour. Tjaša proposed she should describe the history of child labour, try to find out which  organizations  are coping  with exploitation of child labour in South Asia and which are their programs, politics. Janja suggested she should find out why in South Asia the exploitation of child labour is so comprehensive, and will manage to find out how the economic crisis affects the exploitation of child labour.

Decision: We formed ten basic and simple working questions and equally distributed the tasks among our group members.

 ITEM 4

Discussion: After the discussion of research and working questions, we focused on the literature. All group members had already find some appropriate literature on the internet which could benefit us during the process of project making.

Decision: We decided we will use the literature that was allready found.

 ITEM 5

Discussion: We were talking about the date of our next meeting, where our further assignments will be distributed. Janja suggested we could meet on Thursday, because that day our lectures begin at 16:00.

Decision: We decided that our next meeting will be held on Thursday, 25 March 2010, at 14:00, in Fdv library.

Decision: We decided we will add the minutes and correct our title until Saturday.

  ITEM 3

Discussion: We were discussing about our report. Blaž suggested every member of our group should write his or her own part of the report by himself or herself. Tjaša suggested we could write those parts of report that were according to our ditribution of tasks, so she should describe the history of of child labour, and try to find how the organizations are coping with exploitation of this issue in South Asia and which are their programs. Katjuša should write about child labour in generally, about exploitation of it in South Asia and also about Slovenian law concerning child labour in our country, Blaž should focus on causes and impacts on child labour in South Asia and try to find out if developing Asian countries are supposingly deliberately impending repressions over exploitation of child labour, and Janja should find out why in South Asia the exploitation of child labour is so comprehensive, and will have to find out how the economic crisis affects the exploitation of child labour. Katjuša suggested we should all do our tasks until nekt week. We were also discussing about our empirical part.
