ECOLOGICAL EFFECTS OF DISPERSED SETTLEMENT PATTERN IN SLOVENIA

DEFINITION:

Slovenia is notorious for its anti-urban ideology, high rate of single-family housing and low population density. Majority of Slovenians do not want to live in the cities and prefer to inhabit countryside. Around 69% of Slovenians live in single-family housing, which is high above the EU average of 34% (Eurostat). These factors produce a unique socio-spatial pattern of settlement, which represents a huge environmental and economical problem. The biggest problem is building of infrastructure, which is costly and evironmentaly unacceptable. Roads that must be laid, sewers that ought to be built, electricity, internet. All these networks of infrastructure represent a huge enchroachment into a natural habitat of animals, enormous environmental impact.

The EU is building its future on sustainable development, which interconnects the needs of economy, population and nature. The Slovenian way is not sustainable, not for the economy, nor the environment. If Slovenia wants to meet EU expectations and benefit the world progress into the better and more environmentaly friendly future, we should do something. However, to discover what this something is, is another, much harder, question.

Research Questions:

1. Why is the DDP a problem?

2. Why is this kind of pattern dominant in Slovenia?

3. Which kind of ecological problems does this pattern cause?

4. Which kind of economical problems does this pattern cause?

5. Are there any advantages of this kind of this pattern?

6. What are the possible solutions of this problem?

7. How can ordinary citizens contribute to lowering the economic and ecological effects?

8. How can we improve the infrastructure?

9. Which are the positive and negative effects of dense and rare settlement?

10. Which forms of settlement are the least problematic for our environment?

Glossary:

single-family detached home - enodružinska hiša

population density - gostota prebivalstva

pattern of settlement - vzorec poselitve

encroachment - poseg

condensation - zgoščevanje

land-planning - prostorsko načrtovanje

migration - preseljevanje

environmental and economical problems - okoljski in ekonomski problemi

congestion - prenatrpanost

dense/rare settlement - gosta/redka poselitev

Absent: /

Agenda:

1. Group name selection

2. Distribution of tasks

3. Setting a date for the next meeting

Item 1:

Discussion: We talked about the name of the group. After a few minutes of giving suggestions Nika suggested the name Annoying Oranges and then we finally chose our group name.

Decision: We all agreed that the group name is going to be Annoying Oranges.

Item 2:

Discussion: We talked about the division of roles, but we could not decide about that yet. Decision: We will talk about distribution of roles again at our next meeting.

Item 3:

Discussion: We talked about the date of our next meeting. Nika and Adrijana suggested that the next meeting should be held on 2nd of March at Šumi at 14.00. Klemen, Nina V. and Nina P. said that they have other obligations and they proposed that our next meeting should be held on 3rd of March at Glažuta at 12.00.

Decision: We all agreed that the meeting will be held on 3rd of March at Glažuta at 12:00.

Minute taker: Adrijana and Nika

2. Minutes of the 2nd meeting »Problem Based Learning Project«

held on 3 March, 2011 at Glažuta

Present: Klemen, Nina V., Nina P., Adrijana, Nika

Absent: /

Agenda:

1. Distribution of roles

2. Selection of the topic of PBL and discussing about it

3. Defining the problem we are going to work on

4. Proposing research questions

5. Chosing proper pieces of literature

Item 1:

Discussion: We had some problems distributing the roles according to our personalities. Nina V. suggested that we introspected ourselves through silent meditation and through that think about our personal advantages and disadvantages. After this process of self-analysis we distributed  the roles among each other. However, we came to an agreement that these roles are optional and can be changed.

Decision:  We decided that Nina P. should be the  secretary, Adrijana the time keeper, Nina V.  the progress keeper, Klemen  chairperson, Nika the reserve.

Item 2:

Discussion: Firstly, we were deciding between two themes: nuclear power plants and disperse demographic pattern in Slovenia. We thought that both topics are relavant and up-to-date ecological problems. However, Klemen reasoned that demographic pattern of settlement was a distinctive problem in Slovenia and so we should focus on it. Adrijana stated that this topic was also more burning on the social and political level, due to legislative discussions in the   parliament. The rest of the team agreed.

Decision: We decided to focus on distinctive disperse demographic pattern of settlement in Slovenia as a general topic of PBL.

Item 3:

Discussion: We agreed that our chosen problem is connected to many distinctive Slovenian patterns. Nika remembered that we had dicsussed similar problems during the 'Prostorska sociologija' (Spatial sociology) and that our professor had specially emphasized the ecological effects of this demographical pattern. Nina V. recalled she had read an article on this topic in which the author had called to attention the ecological and economical effects of infrastructure that ought to be built for this kind of settlement. Klemen added that right then the sewer was being built in his village Nizka and he is able to witness these problems from first hand.

Decision: Disperse demographic pattern (DDP) represents a huge problem for  the enironment, through infrastructure that is necessary to sustain it (roads, electricity, sewers...). This infrastructure is also extremly costly and that the topic is important for the research.

Item 4:

Discussion: We agreed that we should focus on ecological part of the problem, while always keeping in mind the economic parts of it. Nina P. suggested we should brainstrom the ideas, write them down and discuss them.  She also added that ideas should focus on the problem, why it was important and why it concerned us,  while trying to look for solutions.

Decision: This following questions were produced.

1. Why is the DDP a problem? Adrijana

2. Why is this kind of pattern dominant in Slovenia? Adrijana

3. Which kind of ecological problems does this pattern cause? Nika

4. Which kind of economical problems does this pattern cause? Nika

5. Are there any advantages of this kind of this pattern? Nina V.

6. What are the possible solutions of this problem? Nina V.

7. How can ordinary citizens contribute to lowering the economic and ecological effects? Nina P.

8. How can we improve the infrastructure? Nina P.

9. Which are the positive and negative effects of dense and rare settlement? Klemen

10. Which forms of settlement are the least problematic for our environment? Klemen

Item 5:

Discussion: Nika suggested that we looked for the literature at home at Dikul. The rest of us agreed. We also decided that Klemen would have a talk with  Zlatka Ploštajner, who had been a minister Public Administration.

Meeting adjourned.

Minute taker: Nina V., Nina P., Klemen

Minutes of the 3rd meeting »Problem Based Learning Project«

-Which are the positive and negative effects of dense and rare settlement?

-Which forms of settlement are the least problematic for our environment?

Secondly, we discussed how to distribute our research questions that we wrote on our 2nd meeting. FirNina P. and Klemen said that we should divide them equally. We all agreed with her so each of us got 2 research questions.

Decision: Everyone got the following questions: Adrijana got questions 1 and 2, Nika will do questions 3 and 4, Nina V. got 5th and 6th question, Nina P. 7th and 8th question and Klemen will answer 9th and 10th question. We also talked about who is going to do an interview and Klemen volunteered to do an interview with mag. Zlatka Ploštajner.

Item 2:

Discussion: On our meeting we also discussed about improving the glossary. We all realized that we do not have enough concepts for our topic and that we should add some new words. Nina V. and Nika said that we should have at least 10 concepts in our glossary.

Decision: Adrijana proposed that we should all add some new words that are relevant for our topic.

Item 3:
