Exchange student pro blems of adapting to a new environment

Definition:

Every year a lot of students decide to go and study abroad, most of them go to another country for 6 months and they are known as exchange students. To go on an exchange helps students with their academic career and gives them an international perspective. We will discuss about those who come and study in Slovenia. Students which decide to go abroad are facing many  problems and  meeting many obstacles, from the first day they arrive to Slovenia. First of all they have to find a place to stay and second of all they have to find stores to buy some food and busses which drive to their faculties. It is not easy to be alone in a country you do not know, especially if you do not have any social contacts or if you do not know anyone who could help you.

 Research questions:

  • Who do exchange students ask for help with finding a place to stay? (Dejan)
  •  Where do exchange students mostly stay at? (Špela)
  • What is the student exchange program? (Ana)

  • What is it like not knowing the language? (Aleša)
  • What is it like not knowing anyone? (Špela)
  • Who can exchange students ask for help? (Ana)
  • What is it like the first day they come to Slovenia? (Dejan)
  • What is Erasmus programe? (Aleša)

Glossary:

- International mobility – mednarodna mobilnost

- Education policy – izobraževalna politika

- Erasmus programme – program Erasmus

- Culture shock – kulturni šok

- Acculturation – akulturacija (The adjustment of an individual to a foreign culture. Applies to the process of acquiring a second culture that is added to and mixed with the individual’s first culture.)

- Intercultural communication – medkulturno sporazumevanje

Minutes of the first meeting, held on February 21st 2012, at 2.00PM at FDV Library

Items of the agenda:

1. Choosing the name of the group

2. Assigning roles

3. Time and place of next meeting

Item 1

Discussion: There were no problems regarding the name of the group. Dejan suggested the name Charlie's Angels, because there are three girls and one boy in the group, which reminded the group of the movie and TV series where there are also three crime fighting girls and Bosley who is their boss. The rest of the group agreed and so our group was all set.

Decision: We decided for the name Charlie's Angels.

Item 2

Discussion: We assigned roles to the members of the group. No one in the group had any preferences, so we organized a random selection.

Decision: Špela Dermastja is the leader of the group, Dejan Ilovar is the time-keeper, Aleša Zalar is the secretary, Ana Šuštaršič is the reporter.

Item 3

Discussion: We discussed the time and place of our second meeting.

Decision: Our next meeting will take place on Tuesday, after class in the library. We have also set up a Facebook Group where we can also discuss the project further; we can also have midnight brainstorming sessions on Facebook.

Present: Aleša Zalar, Ana Šuštaršič, Špela Dermastja, Dejan Ilovar

  .

Item 2 Defining the central problem

We decided to take on the problem of the adaptation to a new environment of exchange students.

Item 3 Defining the research questions.

Each member of the group came up with a couple od research question. We selected the most appropriate and posted them below.

2.       Revising collected literature and distributing relevant sources to group individuals,

3.       Setting the date of the next meeting.

Item 1

Because we decided on another title, we were forced to  select different research questions. The group members expressed their wishes on answering the research questions. Each member picked two questions of their own choice.

Item 2

We searched for literature for our questions. By working as a group we quickly found enough material to process and get our desired information.
