Unfavorable consequences of the new smoking legislation in Slovenia

Problem

Smoking is one of the most frequent problems in every contemporary society around the world. Each country is trying to find a solution in different ways, the most common way being the smoking law. Slovenia recently intoruced a new smoking legislation and we think that freedom of smokers in Slovenia was limited by it. Since now it is prohibited to smoke inside, smokers feel excluded in bars, restaurants and other public places. Some smokers believe that state can not interfere in such a way.

Research questions:

1. How was this new smoking legislation ratified?
2. Was it really a democratic way?
3. What were the reasons for the implementation of this law?
4. What is the opinion of smokers on this legislation?
5. What is the opinion of non-smokers on this legislation?
6. What is the opinion of pub and restaurant owners on this legislation?
7. How do people compare the current situation with the past?
8. How can we define the word freedom?

Assignments:

Zbynek will research questions 1 and 2.
Ales will try to solve question 3 and 6.
Honza will contact smokers and non-smokers and ask for their opinions.
Marie will find out the answers to questions 7 and 8.

Minutes of the second meeting of the group Czech Ghetto

(held on 14 April, 2008 at FDV library)

Present: Aleš Jirasek, Marie Laudatova, Zbynek Crha
Absent: Jan Zapadlo

Agenda:

1. Concretization of our problem
2. Finding research questions and distribution of work
3. Finding sources

Item 1:

We finally decided on our problem. There are many problematic questions in the field of smoking. After a long discussion we decided to explore the following problem: freedom of smokers in Slovenia was limited by the new smoking legislation.

Item 2:

We all agreed on following research questions:

The work was distributed in the following way:

Zbynek will research questions 1 and 2.
Ales will try to solve question 3 and 6.
Honza will contact smokers and non-smokers and ask for their opinions.
Marie will find out the answers to questions 7 and 8.

Item 3:

We decided to use mostly Internet sources, forums or discussions but also books or newspapers. One of the main sources would be interviews with people.

Decision:
We found these sources:

The word “freedom” on Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Freedom_%28political%29
Interviews with smokers, non-smokers, bar owners and other people.

The next meeting will be held on Monday, 21 April, 2008 at 2 PM at FDV library.

Minutes taker: Marie
Chair: Ales

Minutes of the third meeting of the group Czech Ghetto

(held on 7th of May, 2008 at FDV library)

Present: Marie Laudatova, Jan Zapadlo
Absent: Aleš Jirasek, Zbynek Crha

Agenda:

1. Improving our whole text
2. Making up the list of literature
3. Discussing our progress in solving the problem

Item 1:

We read all the instructions in the forum and followed them to make our text better. The most visible shift is the change of our headline to "Attitudes of people influenced by the new smoking legislation in Slovenia". We also added some pictures with their sources.

Item 2:

We added two other Internet sources which could be relevant for our research. One of them reflects the situation before the implementation and the second one shows the situation after.

Item 3:

We discussed our findings about the topic. Honza had talked with both sides of involved people, smokers and non-smokers, and collected a lot of information. Marie had found some interesting sources which could help her to answer the research questions.
