Definition:
There have always been different kinds of professional risks at work and there are many work-related health problems. In the past these were predominantly of physical nature (various injuries). Nowadays psychological problems have become widespread and represent a burning issue of modern society. The term burnout appeared in the 21st century and is regarded as an occupational disease. According to Wikipedia (online) burnout is "a psychological term and means the experience of long-term exhaustion and diminished interest (depersonalization or cynicism), usually in the work context".

Since this problem is also present in many Slovenian companies and many workers report about it, we will try to find out how we can treat burnout and what kind of solutions are suggested.

Problem:
Is occupational burnout a disease of the 21st century?

Research questions:
  1. Can job burnout be called a professional disease of 21st century?
  2. How can we recognize it and what are the signs of burnout?
  3. What are the reasons for the increase of professional burnout?
  4. Which professions are the most/least threatened by professional burnout?
  5. What are the worst consequences of professional burnout?
  6. How can we stop it or prevent ourselves from suffering professional burnout?
  7. Are nurses who work at University Medical Centre Ljubljana on a way to burn out?

Distribution of tasks:

Maja will write the introduction and definition. She will explain what the signs of burnout are and how we can recognize it.

Katja will research the causes that lead to job burnout.

Nina will write about the consequences of professional burnout.

Sara will answer the question how burnout can be prevented and how we can deal with it.

Špela will interview a general practicioner and write conclusions

Minutes of the first meeting "Problem Based Learning Project"
held on 11 October, 2007 at FDV's library

Present: Maja, Nina, Špela, Katja, Sara
Absent: /

Agenda:
  1. Specification of the topic and the definition of the problem
  2. Forming research questions
  3. Any other business
Item 1:
Discussion: When we started our meeting we had two ideas of what we would research. The first idea was to do a comparison between work-related health problems of two different (professional) workers and the second idea was to do a research on professional burnout. A question whether this disease can be treated as a proffesional disease appeared. After a discussion we all agreed that  our research will be focused on the problem of the professional burnout, which can be treated as a professional disease of 21st century.
Then we started discussion. Nina said that burnout was a big problem because people spend more and more time at workplace and it is very easy to lose a job. Because of that people are under a great stress which can lead to professional burnout. Sara suggested that we should focus on two kinds of workers: manual workers and those who work on higher positions because they probably both suffer from burnout but in a different way. Katja also reminded us that a few days ago a woman died because of burnout.
Decision: We agreed on the second title: Professional burnout as a disease. We have also explained the meaning of burnout in the definition.

Item 2:
Discussion: We decided which questions are important for our presentation and we have written them down.
Decision: We all agreed about research questions.

Item 3:
Discussion: Maja and Špela proposed that we could carry out interviews with different psychologists, sociologists or doctors. That would help us to prove that professional burnout is a big problem in the 21st century. Afterwards Katja suggested that we should find some data about the consumption of sedatives and anti-depressives to find out if there is an increased consumption of them. These numbers could lead us to think that burnout is increasing and it is becoming a huge problem. Nina also reminded us that there was a seminary about a professional burnout and that it could help us to get some useful information on our theme. We also decided that we all have to find literature until the next meeting.
Decision: We all agreed about Maja’s and Špela’s proposals and established some assignments which should be done until the next meeting. We all have to find some literature about our topic until the next meeting so that we will discuss assignments in advance in the next meeting.

Assignments:
At the beginning we distributed the tasks. We all agreed that the tasks must be fairly distributed because it is not fair that someone will work hard for the group but others will not. We decided that at every meeting Nina will bring a form for writing minutes and then we will all together write it down. Špela will then send it to Sara. Sara will publish every document on the wiki and will also keep all the documents. Maja’s duty is to contact the teacher and to put together all the documents that we will write. Katja’s duty is to make power point slides for the presentation of the PBL project and also to finish the documents with Maja. Nina will, as our time-keeper, make sure that everything is done in time.
Decision:
The tasks are fairly distributed so that everyone has its own duty.

The next meeting will be held on Wednesday, 17 October, 2007 at 8.00 AM at FDV library.

Minutes taker: Katja
Chair: Maja

Minutes of the second meeting "Problem Based Learning Project"

held on 17 October, 2007 at FDV's library

Present: Nina, Maja, Katja, Sara, Špela
Absent: /

Agenda:
  1. Choosing the literature
  2. Distribution of the tasks
  3. Any other business

Item 1:
Discussion: We all did our work and  brought to the meeting the literature that we found. Sara and Špela found a lot of articles on professional burnout in English and in Slovene and a lot of Internet sites with our topic. Katja and Maja also found 3 books with our topic, and we all agreed that we will use them. Nina offered to search for some books which can be found in the library of the Faculty for Social Work.
Decision: We found the appropriate books and articles for our topic.

Item 2:
Discussion: Before we distributed the tasks, we made a draft for our PBL project. We agreed that we should more or less write about general things because the topic is very general but the number of words is limited. We distributed the tasks equally as we thought that it was the best.

Assignments:

Maja will write the introduction and definition. She will explain what the signs of burnout are and how we can recognize it.

Katja will research the conditions in which this disease appears.

Nina will write about the consequences of professional burnout.

Sara will answer the question how burnout can be prevented and how we can deal with it.

Špela will interview a general practicioner and write conclusions.

Item 3:
Discussion: Maja proposed that we should hold our next meeting on 24th of October at 8.30 at FDV library. Sara said that she would try to add pictures on the wiki page. Špela, Katja and Nina agreed that we must read the minutes and text on our wiki page and try to correct our mistakes.
Decision: We all agreed on the proposed date.

The next meeting will be held on Wednesday, 24th October, 2007 at 8.30 AM at FDV library.

Minutes taker: Špela

Chair: Maja

Minutes of the third meeting "Problem Based Learning Project"

held on 24 October, 2007 at FDV's library

Present: Maja, Špela, Nina, Katja, Sara

Absent: /

Agenda:

  1. Action-item follow up
  2. Glossary
  3. Any other business

Item 1:

Discussion: All assignements from the previous meeting have been carried out. Nina said that we will not be able to use books from the Faculty of Social Work because they are lent.

Decision: We will continue with our research and we will try to finish it till the next meeting. Then we will discuss about possible improvements of our research. We will use the literature that is written down on the wiki page.

Item 2:

Discussion: We have all found some expressions for our glossary. Sara and Katja proposed that we should post all the terms on the wiki page and then choose the expressions which could be used in our glossary. We have all agreed with their proposal.

Decision: We will select the most appropriate terms for our glossary and translate them in Slovene.

Item 3:

Discussion: We discussed about the interviews with a general practitioner and with a hospital nurse. Maja looked for their e-mail addresses and their telephone numbers. Špela put together the draft questionnaire for the interviews.

Decision: We will improve the draft questionnaire for the interviewes. We will also contact a hospital nurse and a general practitioner and try to make arrangements with them for the interviews.

Assignments:

We will carry out our research and work on the tasks which are already distributed. We will find expressions for our glossary and translate them in Slovene. We will interview a general practitioner and hospital nurses.

Minutes of the fourth meeting "Problem Based Learning Project"

held on 3rd October, 2007 at Maja´s place

Present: Katja, Sara, Špela, Nina, Maja

Absent: /

Agenda:

1. Work progress

2. Defining the structure of our report

3. Any other business

Item 1:

Discussion: We talked about how our work is progressing. Špela already wrote to doctor and now she is waiting for him to send her back the questionnaire because she was not able to arrange to meet him because of his absence and to take the interview. When he will send it back, she will be able to write the analysis of the research and the conclusion. Sara already wrote her part of the report, but she had some difficulties with citing the literature. We helped her to solve this problem. Maja also sent the questionnaire (for nurses) and is now waiting to get it back. Nina and Katja have almost finished their parts. They just have to do some improvements.

Decision: We all agreed that we are progressing well and that we will do our report at the time. We just need the doctor and nurses to answer us as soon as possible so that we will be able to finish the report.

Item 2:

Discussion:We discussed about the final structure of the report. We found out that at the time we are not able to write it in details because we still do not have all parts of the report.

Decision: We defined the skeleton structure. Final structure will be done on our next meeting when all of us will write our parts and the questionnaires will be sent back to us.

Item 3:

Discussion:We talked about our last meeting. By then we will write all parts of the report so we will be able to define the strucure and put all the parts together. We have also agreed that if we will have any problems we will be in contact via wiki or MSN.

Decision: The next meeting will be held on Monday, 5th November at 9.30 AM at FDV´s library. It is possible that we will meet again on Thursday.
