Stereotyping of women in Slovenian military

*2

Definition:

In contemporary world women are equal to men, but in some professions they are still less represented than men. An example of such occupation where women are less represented is the military. The expression military can be understood as a country's organized defense forces. Slovenia faces the problem of a small number of women in the millitary. There are many reasons for this, one of them being the stereotypical division of jobs where working in the military is understood primarily as a male occupation.

Hypotesis:

  • Women in the Slovenian military are worse represented than men, because in our society this profession is understood as a male occupation.
  • Women do not decide for the profession of a soldier in the Slovenian military because  they  prefer to assume typical occupations, such as: nurses, teachers, secretaries, seamstresses, stewardesses, etc.

10 working questions:

1.) What kind of changes should we make to increase number of women in army? (Amelija)

2.) Why are women underestimated, based on  their  physical weaknesses? (Kaja)

3.) What kind of professions do they perform in the army? Are on the highest positions only men? (Kaja)

4.) Do women have to work twice as hard to achieve the same position of work as men? (Monika)

5.) Are women in the army treated the same as men, or are they considered as effeminate person? (Sanja)

6.) Are women treated differently than men in Slovenian military? Are they causing more problems than good?(Andreja)

7.) Because of what women do not decide for work in the militay? (Andreja)

8.) How appreciated is women work in the army? (Sanja)

9.) How can we prevent the problem that management do not like to employ female manpower? They prefer male manpower. (Monika)

10.) Is there any difference between women working as a soldier in the past and in the present? (Amelija)

Discussion: At first we discussed on the main context of our theme which is Stereotyping women. Than we begin to talk about outset and the introduction in our theme. Later we talked about the theme because Andreja proposed politics, Kaja wanted to do research about women in engineering, but Sanja and Monika proposed stereotyping women in military. Amelija agreed with Sanja and Monika.

Decision: We all agreed that Sanja's and Monika's proposition was the best, and at the end we decided that our theme will be Stereotyping women in the Slovenian military. We select this theme because in our faculty there is a professor who is also Minister of Defence, and we will try to get an interview with her. Kaja and Amelija have also a acquaintance who are studying Defence studies. Because this topic is Ljubica Jelušič province we hope that she may give us some useful information about the army.

Item 3:

Discussion: We talked about 10 different questions which refer to our theme. Each of us suggested questions and than we choose 10 which we thought that were the best. Andreja generally proposed questions regarding to how women are treated and Kaja and Amelija suggested that it is good to know something more specific about the army, solders...

Decision: We decided for 10 questions which included all of our ideas about the theme.

Item 4:

Discussion: We talked about different possibilities of using literature. Sanja suggest books in e-library and Monika suggested to look for internet sources.

To make our work easier, Kaja proposed, that we should expand ten working questions to the sub-questions. We went through each question together, to see approximately how long the answers are.
