Mobbing at workplace

                                                                             Picture 2

Definition:

Mobbing is highly present today affecting more and more employed people. Mobbing is defined as psychological aggression that often involves a group of "mobbers" rather than a single person. Theoretically, mobbing is an extreme type of social stressor at work. "Unlike "normal" social sterssors, however, mobbing is a long-lasting, escalated conflict with frequent harassing actions systematically aimed at a target person" (Einarsen and Skogstand, 1996).

According to Heinz Leymann, mobbing "is full of conflict communication in the workplace between colleagues and between superiors and their subordinates, when the person  in the junior position is attacked and exposed to systematic and long time continiuing attack of one or more persons in order of labor organization or system" (Leymann in Drobnič, 2006).

In our research we will focus on new employees. Our theoretical part will present the reasons for mobbing and activities for preventing it. We will write about acts and phases of mobbing and how mobbing affects the physical and emotional state of the victim and analyse the consequences. We will explore how present  mobbing is in Slovenia. In the survey we will try to confirm or refute our hypothesis.

Our hypothesis:

New employees are more exposed to mobbing in the workplace.

Our research project will contain the following questions:

1.) What are the causes and consequences of mobbing for the newly employed people? (Brina)

2.) Are the newly employed people more exposed to the process of mobbing? (Sabina)

3.) Does the newly employed person feel discriminated? (Brina)

4.) In what ways is mobbing manifested in the work place? (Tamara)

5.) What are the reasons for mobbing and which activities do we know for preventing it? (Anita)

6.) What acts of mobbing and what phases of mobbing do we know? (Tamara)

7.) How does mobbing  affect the physical and emotional state of the victim? (Anita)

8.)  Is mobbing  more frequant in the lower levels whitin the organization? (Sabina)

9.) What consequences does mobbing have for its victims, coworkers, organization and the whole society? (Tamara)

10.) How present is mobbing in Slovenia and which institutions are involved in preventing it? (Anita)

11.) What are the causes for mobbing, according to the newly employed? (Sabina)

12.) What health problems appear in the working place because of the poor relationships among coworkers? (Brina)

  3. Forming research questions
  4. Finding literature
  5. Distribution of tasks
  6. Any other business

First agenda item:

Decision: The purpose of our first meeting was primarily to select the topic which we would be working on. We went through the list of topics and found out the best topic for us was the one that talks about discrimination and work.

Second agenda item:

Decision: We decided that our basic research is to find out how mobbing affects  new employees.

Third agenda item:

After defining our basic problem, we started to form research questions. Each of us formed one question and we all agreed with the suggestions.

Fourth agenda item:

We started searching for literature on the Internet and in the FDV library. We used Cobiss and similar WebPages for the Internet search.

Fifth agenda item:

After some discusion we did not agree on the distribution of tasks.

Sixth agenda item:

We also discussed whether we will use an interview or a survey. We agreed that this will be decided on the meetings in the future.

We agreed that the next meeting will take place on 2nd March at 16.00 via e-mail.

2.      correcting the hypothesis

3.      changing the literature

4.      any other business

Item 1:

We were informed that our primary topic was too generally focused so we decided that we will narrow it down to mobbing at workplace. We all agreed that this topic was very interesting and that we would like to research it more.

Decision: We also decided that we will narrow it down even more, so we will research mobbing on newly employed.

Item 2:

Discussion: When we decided to change our topic we also had to change the hypothesis. Each of us gave some suggestions and then we combined those suggestions.

Item 3:

Discussion: We also had to change our literature. Each of us had to find some literature on the Internet or in the library. At the meeting we compared our findings and we discussed which literature is appropriate and which is not.

Decision: We all agreed on the literature that is given in this page.

Item 4:

We had to decide when our next meeting will be and we decided that we will hold our meeting on 12th March 2009 via email or in the FDV library. The place of the meeting was not decided yet.
