Intrinsic & extrinsic motivators in administration and in manufacturing industry

Motivation is having willingness and desire to do something. Managers try to motivate empoyees by giving them different rewards. There are two kinds of rewards, extrinsic and intrinsic. Extrinsic rewards are for example, praise, money, more personal days, longer lunch break,… Intrinsic rewards are good vertical and horizontal comunnication, satisfaction or accomplishment. An idea of reward for achievement is absent because rewards are an extrinsic factor. Motivators vary according to different levels in the organization.

Manufacturing workers are primarily  motivated by the extrinsic factors and there is a lack of intrinsic motivation.  In our research we are going to find out what can be done to increase this kind of motivation.

HYPOTHESES:

1. Workers in administration are more motivated by intrinsic motivators whereas workers in manufacturing industry find extrinsic factors more motivating.

2. Differences between motivators in administration and in manufactury industry that are listed in the literature are slightly exaggerated. Workers are best motivated with a combination of both motivators ( intrinsic & extrinsic).

RESEARCH QUESTIONS:

1.  Which theories best  define work motivation?

2.  How are intrinsic and extrinsic motivators defined?

3.  Which motivators belong to the intrisic and which to the extrinsic category ?

4.  Does a combination of motivators really motivate workers best?

    Discussion of issues

Issue 1: We first met to discuss our topic for PBL.

Decision 1: We decided that our topic will be: How to motivate people in organizations.

    Issue 2: Defined problem

We went to dr.- Černigoj-Sadar and with her help we decided to find out what motivates workers  in office (administration) and what  in manufacturing industry. We think that there must be major differences between those two groups of workers. As  future managers we are interested if there is any difference between those groups, especially we would like to know which group is more motivated by material motivators and which  by non-material. We think that the problem which we will research is a very important topic in the organization. If people are satisfied with their job, colleagues and salary,  they are more successful and give more attention to the work.

So the title for our seminar work is : What motivates workers in administration and what in manufacturing industry.

    Girls do you agree?

    Anja: Petra I agree :)

Tina: I think that our topic is very interesting. I am also very happy that we already have all the literature we need.  Now we just have to decide what each member will do.

Decision 2: The title for our seminar work is : Intrinsic and extrinsic motivators in administration and in manufaturing industry.

     &

    Issue 3: PROBLEM

Petra: Girls, Jana still didn't send me back e-mail, so we still don't know what to do with our topic. I hope that Jana And Mrs. Černigoj Sadar will talk with each other because one of them said something and the other one something else. I think it's about time, that we know if our topic is ok.

Tina and Martina, because you were absent today: till Friday we have to improve our problem, make the right topic, write minutes for our 1st meeting and write the list of literature. I think this won't be a big problem, because we already have sent the literature to Jana. I suggest we could have a coffee time before the management class on Thursday, do you agree?

I think I'm going to be   hahahaha

    Issue 4: Literature:

    • Cooper, C. L., Robertson, I.T. (1996): Key Reviews in Managerial Psychology (Concepts and research for practice), John Willy & Sons Ltd, Manchaster
    • Anderson, N., Ones, D.S., Sinangil, H.K., Viswesvoran, C. (2002): Industrial, Work & Organizational Psychology, Vol. 2, Sage publication Ltd, London

    • Landes, L. (2006): Getting the Best ou of People in the Workplace, Journal for Quality & Participation, Vol. 29 Issue 4, 27-29

I hope that the literature is ok.

Tina:  I don't think this wiil be a problem, because tomorrow in Organizational Behaviour Class prof. Nadoh will give us back our concept for seminar work and then we'll know if our topic is ok. I don't understand what you mean with : improve our topic. What do we have to do? Please explain.

I think that is a good idea if we meet on Thursday and complete our tasks for this week. I think that the literature that we have is ok. I have already read some of the texts and we can use a lot of it in our seminar work. In the book How to motivate people there are chapters about different ways of motivating, different material and non-material motivators, how people feel about work, different theories of work motivation... It is very interesting. I hope that rest of you have also read some of the literature.

    See you on thursday!

    Have fun!

Anja: Petra and Tina one big plus for both of u. U two really done your job. About meeting, Thursday will be ok, so see ya tomorrow! Kisses to all.

Petra: Tina, prof. Zorko published some slides on how to define the problem. And it's quite different. So we should change it. We can try to do this on Thursday. I think if we meet on Thursday at 1p.m., it would be enough time to do  minutes.

Tina, do you have copies from the books which  prof. Sadar-Černigoj gave us?

Decision 3: We have all literature!

She gave us a book Lamovec: Psihodiagnostika osebnosti, where is an adequate questionnaire for our seminar work about different motivators which are used on different work places in factory. She also gave us some good advices for the report and how to make it better.

Decision: In case we  need help or if have some questions, we will go to prof. Mesner-Andolšek or prof. Nadoh-Bergoč.

    Item 2:

Discussion: We read the summaries of the literature. Katja, Martina and Klavdija selected the main points. We have the theortical part of our seminar work, now we have to write the introduction. Tina and Klavdija will write introduction until next week and the conclusion at the end of our project.

Decision: The central part is actually finished and we think it is quite good, because we managed to seperate key points of our seminar work from other useles literature.

    Item 3:

Discussion: Prof. Černigoj-Sadar suggested us a book, where the questionnaire about motivators already exist. Tina went to Philosophical

university and borrowed it. The questionnaire is really adequate. We added some questions, that the poll we will use does not contain, but we need them in order to confirm or reject our hipotheses about intrinsic and extrinsic motivators.

Decision: Our pool is compleated. Next week we will take it to the factory and give it to the employees to fill them out and help us to get some useful answers for our research work.

Perhaps this can help: 1) Go to your page and click 'edit'. 2) Then select all the content and cut it out so that the page is completely empty. 3) Paste the cut content into a Word document and delete all the pictures. 4) Then copy the Word text into your empty wiki page with CTRL+V. 5) The editor will offer you to clean it before pasting. Accept it. 6) A window will open where you can paste the text with CTRL+V. Also select both 'Ignore font tace definitions' and 'Remove style definitions'. 7) Click OK. >>>>>>>>>> With this you should have the whole text in your page but without any styes. This will enable you to apply any new style that you like and that the wiki offers. Try it out. If anything goes wrong you can still revert your wiki page to the previous version.

Well done. There are things in your page that need to be revised and we will take a look at them on Tuesday. See you then!

Hi, your page clearly states the title of your project, a brief definition, a list of literature and also contains the minutes of the meeting – you’we done a good job. *** During the weekend or later on try to improve the definition of your PBL problem. The focus of the definition is on the PROBLEM and you will try to write what you perceive as problematic in relation to your topic. Compare your problem definition to the sample in the blog and remember how we analysed it in class. Then revise yours. You can return to the definition every week and brush it up until it is good enough to be included in you report. *** You can correct typos such as 'wiil' ('will') or 'than' ('then'). PS: You have a very well designed page!

You don't have permission to comment on this page.
