EMOTIONAL COMMITMENT TO THE ORGANIZATION IN THE TIME OF CRISIS

Employees with strong emotional commitment are of great importance to the organization,

because they contribute to the success of the company. What happens when the organization

is facing a crisis? How will the people react to the changes, and how will their reaction contribute

to the future of the company itself. We will interview former employees of the Automobile Factory Maribor (TAM),

and this way get first-hand perspective on the subject.

Literature:

  • J.R. Schermerhorn (2003): Organizational behaviour. New york, Wiley.
  • Millar, Heath (2004): Responding to crisis. Mahwah, Erlbaum.
  • Malešič, M. (2004): Krizno upravljanje in vodenje v Sloveniji. Ljubljana, FDV.
  • Stanojević, Miroslav (2001): Uspešna nedozorelost. Ljubljana, FDV.

Hypothesis

The importance of commitment to the organization is increasing when the organization is down-falling (for example in the time of crises). We persume that the emotinal commitment is stronger in the time of crises.

Research questions

1. What is emotional commitment to the organization?

2. How does emotional commitment influence the success of the company?

3. What is negative and positive behavior in the time of crises?

4. How did layoffs in TAM affect the employees, what were the changes in their behavior?

5. What happened to their motivation and to the loyalty to the company?

Minutes of the 1st group meeting

held on 22 February, 2007 at FDV library

Present: Sandr Anderlič, Aljaž Fojtl, Jasmina Herman and Maja Zupanc

                  Absent: Pavel Kutnjak

Agenda:

1. Distribution of roles and tasks

2. Deciding on definition

3. Other business

Item 1:

We have all agreed that Jasmina should be the chairperson because of her bossy nature :) Maja will be secretary mostly because she insisted and nobody argued. The timekeeper, we agreed, should be a person with a sense of time. As Sandra is alwyas on time she is perfect for the job.

Item 2:

Discussion:

We discussed different aproaches and ways to define our topic. We browsed the internet and searched in the library. Two members of our group are from Maribor, and they thought of an example of company crisis related to the crisis in Automobile Factory Maribor (TAM).  The 1980`s brought financial difficulties, and in 1996 the company was dissolved. We decided to interview those, who used to work there.

Item 3:

We talked about literature, and what we should post on the PBL page. In the library we found some interesting books on our topic, and decided that we should use them for our semenary work.

Next meeting will be held on MSN Messenger and later summed into minutes.

Minutes of the 2nd group meetings

held on 5 March, 2007 at FDV library

Present: Sandra Anderlič, Aljaž Fojtl, Jasmina Herman, Pavel Kutnjak and Maja Zupanc

   Absent: /

Agenda:

1. Discussing what has been done

2. Preparing research questions and hypothesis

3. Other business

Item 1

Discussion:

We held a discussion on the literature that we have read about our subject. Pavel said that he came across some interesting articles on the Internet related to our subject. Each of us wrote down ideas for our hypothesis.

Item 2

Discussion:

We talked about what should we focus on in our subject. We also discussed our views on emotional commintment in the time of crisis. Do we belive that commitment is increasing or is it the other way around.

Decision:

We formed the questions according to the title and the literature we found. One of the questins concerns a research in TAM. We have all agreed on the hypothesis.

Item 3

Discussion:

We talked about what we should do for the next meeting. Jasmina said that it would be best to hold more meetings so we could finish our tasks faster. Others in the group did not agree, because they do not have enough time. It was also sugessted that we should start thinking about the interview with former empoyees in the Automobile Factory Maribor.

Decision:

It was decided that since Jasmina and Aljaž come from Maribor they should work on the interview. At the next meeting they will present their research strategy.

Minutes taker: Maja and Aljaž

Chair: Jasmina

Minutes of the 3rd group meeting

held on 16 March, 2007 at FDV

Present: Sandra Anderlič, Aljaž Fojtl, Jasmina Herman, Pavel Kutnjak and Maja Zupanc

     Absent: /

 Agenda:

1. Discussing what has been done

2. Distributing tasks

3. Discussing research

4. Revising the content of our page

Item 1

Discussion:

We have come to a conclusion that little work has been done due to a busy schedule we all had this week.

Decision:

We decided that this week we will try to catch up with the work that has not been done last week.

Item 2

Discussion:

We concluded that we should distribute the tasks for the seminary work. It consists of two parts. The first part is the theoretical, and the second is our research. We decided to devide ourselves in two groups.

Decision:

Aljaž and Jasmina will concentrate on the research. They will prepare the questions for the interview with former employees of TAM. They will present the questions and ideas for the research at the next meeting. Sandra, Pavel and Maja will write the theoretical part of the seminary work. They will search for books and information about the theories that apply to our topic.

Item 3

Discussion:

For our research we decided to make a questionare which will be filled out by a small group of individuals who used to work in a company that had a crises. From a questionare we will try to answer the research questions that we already formed at the begining.

Item 4

Discussion:

We have also discussed our page on the Wiki. We talked about the mistakes on the PBL page, and how to prevent them.

Decision:

It has been decided that we should be more careful writing minutes. From now on everybody in the group will be more involved in writing reports and correcting mistakes.

Minutes taker: Maja

Chair: Jasmina

Minutes of the 4th group meeting

held on 18 april, 2007 at FDV library

Present: Sandra Anderlič, Aljaž Fojtl, Jasmina Herman, Pavel Kutnjak and Maja Zupanc

   Absent: /

Agenda:

1. Discussing our work on PBL

2. Discissing what has been done

3. Next meeting

Item 1

Discussion:

The meeting started with a discussion considering our work until present time. A major problem was that we did not accomplish our PBL minutes in time. The reason was that nobody in the group had time for a long meeting with the whole group. Every member throughout this time did his own work individualy.

Item 2

Discussion:

Sandra, Pavel and Maja reported that they are doing welll on the first part of the semenary work. They have found a lot of literature on the subject and are now writing the definitions of diferent theories that concern crisi mangement. Aljaž and Jasmina reported that they have already distributed the questioners among the workers who use to work in TAM.

Item 3

Discussion

We have agreed that on friday we should have our last meeting before completing our semenary work. And on sunday we will put the two parts together and discuss what should be done better and correct any mistakes in vocabulary.

Hi, Maja, yes, things are better now :-) But I have mooooore: happends…..te people..…[The importance of commitment to (+ article) organization is rising (=increases) when (+ article) organization is down-falling (use Present Simple Tense) (for example in crises (= in the time of crises)). We are presuming (use Present Simple Tense) that the emotinal commitment in the time of crises (place the phrase after whe verb) is rising (=increases) in fact (= and) it is getting (use Present Simple Tense) stronger.] ……… influence to (preposition)……..the support to the company (is ‘support’ the best choice of word here?)……. browsed on the internet (preposition, capitalisation) …….. they came up with an example (substitute the verb with a more formal one) ……… 1980s' …….. what should we post (word order) …….. decided to write them down as literature (???) …….. buissines……………….. and there is still more. But let's spare something for the next time, shall we? :-)

We have corrected the mistakes and we hope that everything is in order now :)

And, try to rewrite your hypothesis, especially the first sentence. Instead of 'meaning' you probably meant 'importance'. What do you mean by 'racional live ability of organization is down-falling'?
See you on Tuesday.

Hi, everybody, When you have time, go over the page again and look for the spelling mistakes (for example: sucess = success), incorrect prepositions (e.g. influence to = influence on) and bad grammar (How did the layoffs affected…? = How did ….affect…?). The tasks: well done.

Hi, you have already completed your Week 3 assignments :-)) During the following days you can try to improve the definition a bit further and you can use the wiki page to discuss your ideas. You will also correct the spelling mistakes such as 'crisis', 'the', 'automobile', 'the 1980s’ etc. In the minutes you can add the minutes taker and the chair. Good luck with the work!

Hi, your wiki page contains the title of the project which is fine but I wonder why your problem definition is missing. Can you post it, please?

Pozdrav vsem skupaj!
