Hiding homosexual identity within working environment
Problem definition:
Historically, homosexuality was not accepted in the society. Discrimination is still present nowadays, so we decided to focus on discrimination of homosexuals at workplace, which stimulates stigmatization. Goffman defines a stigma as a label that devalues one's social identity and disqualifies him or her from 'full social acceptance'. That's why many homosexuals hide their sexual identity, especially at workplace.
Research question
Gays and lesbians are hiding ther sexual identity within working environment because they are scared to be excluded by society.
Working questions:
1.) What is stigma? (Katarina)
2.) Is homosexuality morally accepted? (Nuša)
3.) Why are homosexuals hiding their sexual identity? (Katarina)
4.) How Slovenian society accepts homosexuality? (Jasmina)

MINUTES
Minutes of the first meeting
Held on the 10th of March from 2.00 pm to 3.20 pm at the FDV library.
Present: Nuša, Katarina, Mojca, Jasmina, Tea
Absent: /
Agenda:
- Selecting a topic
- Defining the problem
- Any other business
Item 1:
Discussion: We were discussing discrimination and stigmatization of homosexuals within the working environment. We found many factors worth focusing on, but we all agreed that the most important issue of gays and lesbians at work is about hiding their sexual orientation.
Action: We decided to focus on hiding sexual identity of homosexuals at workplace.
Item 2:
Discussion: We were wondering how many homosexuals do hide their sexual identity and how does ''staying in closet'' affects their well-being and behaviour at work. Katarina suggested that we should focus on stigma in our definition. Nuša added that we must also consider the historical context of the topic. Mojca pointed out the problem of psychological meaning of discrimination on behaviour of homosexuals.
Action: We decided that we will define our problem with help of Goffman's definition of stigma.
Item 3:
Discussion: We were also discussing about division of roles and where to find literature.
Action: We think that the division of roles is appropriate and for our literature we will look at the FDV library, NUK and internet.
Minutes taker: Tea
Chair: Nuša
Minutes of the second meeting
Held on the 17th of March from 1.50 pm to 2.40 pm at the FDV library.
Present: Nuša, Katarina, Mojca, Jasmina, Tea
Absent: /
Agenda:
- Forming research questions
- Finding literature
- Any other business
Item 1:
Discussion: We were discussing about how gays and lesbians are accepted in Slovenian culture and how that does affect on finding and keeping their jobs. Tea was wondering about laws which protect rights of homeosexuals at workplace. Jasmina reminded us on impact of media on peoples` perception. Katarina appended that psychological explanation is fundamental.
Action: We formed 10 questions which we will process critically.
Item 2:
Discussion: Each of us brought some literature and we were discussing which will help us most in our research. We found handy information in literature of our previous subjects of instruction.
Action: We chose literature which was most appropriate for our project.
Item 3:
Discussion: We were discussing about our interest in different topics within our problem. Each of us will have to centre on specific topic.
Action: We decided that, untill next meeting, we think about which fields of our research would each of us prefer to work on.
Minutes taker: Tea
Chair: Nuša
Minutes of the third meeting
Held on the 24th of March from 1.30 pm to 2.40 pm via e-mail.
Present: Nuša, Katarina, Mojca, Jasmina, Tea
Absent: /
Agenda:
- Action-item follow up
- Task distribution
- Interview
- Any other business
Item 1:
Discussion: We were talking about our progress and Katarna said that we all completed our tasks on time.
Action: We decided to keep-up with this tempo so that we will be ready to finalize our research at our next meeting.
Item 2:
Discussion: Katarina and Nuša wanted to investigate psychological part of our problem. They will explain why this tendency of hiding emerges within working environment and how do homosexuals contribute to it, Jasmina found a lot of literaure about media affects on homosexuals 'coming-out', Mojca was interested into homosexuals rights and Tea will look for how to improve the situation in the future.
Action: We distributed our tasks very easy because we all had different wishes and a lot of interest into the topic.
Item 3:
Discussion: We were talking about how to form our interview questionnaire. Each of us gave some ideas and we formed the questionnaire. We also disscused who should we interview.
Action: We decided that we will interview young homosexuals, students mostly, because in Slovenia student-work is very popular and a lot of students are working beside studying. We are aware that it might not completely fit our assignment, but we will focus on psychological view of the problem.
Item 4:
Discussion: We were discussing how our project will look like, what comes first, how we will connect our work, our findings, how we will finalize our research...
Action: We decided that each of us does her part of the assignment and then we will put it together at the next meeting.
Minutes taker: Tea
Chair: Nuša
