Work-related Stress in Health Service

PROBLEM DEFINITION:

"Work-related stress is a pattern of reaction that occurs when workers are presented with work demands that are not matched to their knowledge, skills, or abilities, and which challenge their ability to cope with these demands. These demands may be related to time pressure or the amount of work (quantity demands), or refer to the difficulty of work (cognitive demands), or the empathy required (emotional demands),or even to the inability  to show one’s emotions at work. Demands may also be physical, i.e. high demands in the area of the dynamic or static loads." (Source: European foundation for the Improvement of Living and Working Conditons, 2005, online).

Our group focused on one specific group of workers - doctors and nurses. We believe that this group is exposed to work-related stress on  a daily basis. For example, when people are sick, they have to go to a doctor where they anxiously wait in lengthy queues for their turn, and meanwhile complain to the staff about how the doctor can not  examine them faster. Because of all this and more,  we believe  that workers in health service are stressed.

MINUTES OF THE FIRST MEETING OF THE GROUP LADYBUGS

(held on 25th February, 2009 at the FDV library, after lunch at 14.45-15.25)

Present: Sabina B., Sabina H., Maja, Anja
Absent: /

AGENDA:
  1. Discussion about topic (selecting topic, defining the basic problem and research question)
  2. Distribution of tasks
  3. Setting a date for the next meeting

Item 1:

Discussion: Our meeting started with selecting the topic of our PBL project. At the beginning we  had a problem  with choosing the right topic so we disagreed about it. After a couple of minutes,  we decided that our topic will  be health and labour. Anja suggested that we should  choose a more specific topic,  for example stress in the  workplace. We agreed and decided that we wanted to research this type of stress  in a more specific  area and  we chose health service. The definition of the basic problem and the research question will be decided at  our  next meeting when we already have more information about the topic from the literature which will help us  accomplish our tasks.
Decision: We mutually agreed that our topic will be »Work-related Stress in Health Service«.

Item 2:

Discussion: We discussed the assignments of each group member. Anja recommended that Sabina B. would  try to find the right literature  and sources for our project until Friday. She would also be responsible for  updating the wiki. We also agreed that Sabina H. will write some research questions and Maja will write the minutes of our first  meeting. Anja will write  the definition of the problem.
Decision: Every group member must do their task until Friday.

Item 3:

Discussion: We recomended some dates for the next meeting.
Decision: The next meeting will be held on Tuesday, 3 March 2009, after English class in FDV library.

Discussion: We all did our assignments from the previous meeting and we are even in advantage, because we have already written research questions last week.

She will post a list of literature on wiki web page and if anyone of us uses some other literature later, she will also add it in the wiki.

Decision: We all decided that Sabina B. is responsible for list of literature.

Item 3:

Discussion: We also discussed about our other assignments this week. Anja will try to improve the theoretical part; she will correct the mistake in our definition until the next meeting. Sabina H. has already done her task and wrote research questions last week, so this week she will just check them again. As I have already mentioned, we will all search for literature, but Sabina B. will publish the resources which we will use. We also agreed that Maja will write what we decided on the second meeting.

Decision: We all agreed about our tasks and assignments which must be done until Sunday.
