TITLE:                 Dissatisfaction of people with excessive surveillance

Definition:

Definition: The number of security cameras being placed practically everywhere (shopping centres, schools, airports etc.) has substantially increased especially since September the 11th 2001. That means that we are all becoming “victims” of  everyday surveillance, and the question is, if we will allow that almost everybody can watch and follow us on every step or will we resist an attack to our privacy and secure (demand) our personal space. One of the largest media-known invasion of privacy was setting up the security cameras in dressing rooms two years ago, in one of the biggest shop in Ljubljana – the Emporium.

Working questions:

  • What is the point of using cctv?

  • Why was cctv invented?
  • Which are the main characteristics in contemporary surveillance?
  • What is mentioned about personal data protection and video-surveillance in Constitution of the Republic of Slovenia?
  • Does Personal data protection act allow execution of video-surveillance?
  • Where is cctv used?
  • How many cctvs are there at your place?
  • How height is the rate of surveillance in Slovenia?
  • What can we do to prevent irruption in our private lives?
  • Have we got any privacy or are we always watched?
  • What about people: do they know that they are watched almost everywhere?
  • Do we even realize that we are being watched all the time?

Minutes of the 1st meeting »Problem Based Learning Project«

MTB COMPANY

1st e-meeting held on 21 February, 2008

Present: Blaž, Tina, Monika, Mateja

Absent: Teja (ill)

Agenda:

1.      Focusing the topic

2.      Forming definition of the problem

     3.      Writing research questions

     4.      Any other business

Item 1:

We searched the Internet and discussed possible topics. Blaž suggested that our topic could be surveillance. We all agreed with the idea but  Tina said we need a more specific topic. Then Blaž suggested that we could talk about CCTV: private vs. public. We thought that the use of CCTV in public places is increasing very fast. And it has caused a lot of debates over public surveillance versus privacy. Because of that reason we all agreed on the definition of topic and that is a very interesting problem.

Item 2:

Blaž wrote a definition of the problem and we all agreed with him. The definition is published in this wiki page.

Item 3:

Blaž also formed the questions. Other members looked at them and completed his list. We defined 9 research questions which will help us through our investigation.

Working questions:

  • What is the point of using cctv?
  • Why was cctv invented?
  • Where is used cctv?
  • Have we got some privacy or are we allwys wetched?
  • Where is the line betwwen public vs. private?
  • Which are positive things of using cctv?
  • Which are negative things of using cctv?
  • What about people: do they know that they are watched almost everywhere?
  • Do we even realize that we are always being watched?

Item 4:

We talked about Žan. He is in our group but nobody had seen or spoken to him.

The next meeting will be held on Thursday, 28 February, 2008 at 12 am at FDV.
