(WORKING) TITLE:

The post-adolescent identity status of the youth: the discordance between the self and the social world.

 DEFINITION:

Gaining and changing your identity is a process that is happening throughout the whole life. A major period in which big transformations in one's identity are being held is the time of one's youth. At the same time, the sole concept of youth and adolescence is being transformed. Ever since the WWII, the period of adolescence is lengthening (which can be seen, for example, in the data that show that nowdays children move away from their parents later in their life), influencing the identity of youth. Because of these transformations, a new concept emerged – post-adolescence. Our group decided to research this changes in the identity of post-adolescents, what caused these changes and what they mean for the society.

Specifically, we will concentrate on the problem of the discordance between the self and the social world, which is one of the reasons for the phenomena of lengthening the period of adolescence. We will also research  how to harmonize the self image of the post-adolescent with the rules in our society, which is necessary for one to solve his post-adolescent crisis.

WORKING QUESTIONS:

  1. What is post-adolescence, and why is it defined as a problem in modern societies?
  2. When did post-adolescence start appearing in history, and what are the historical and social reasons for it?
  3. Why is the problem of post-adolescence so popular in today's discussions?
  4. How to connect post-adolescent syndrome with modern consumer society?
  5. When is most often the end of this period and why?
  6. What is happening with people during the stage of post-adolescence (social life…)?
  7. Are there any connections between post-adolescence and subcultures?
  8. Are there any differences about this stage between different cultures?
  9. Is the stage of post-adolescence inevitable, and if not, how could one avoid it?
  10. How to solve the problem about post-adolescent stage and are there any alternatives?

MINUTES OF THE FIRST MEETING OF THE PBL PROJECT

held on 12th March, 2010 at FDV

Present: Brigita, Sara, Irena, Špela, Živa

Absent: /

Agenda:

  1. Discussion and selection of the topic.
  2. Discussion and formation of the working title.
  3. Definition of the problem.
  4. Any other business.

Item 1:

Discussion: We started with suggestions about the title. We have already decided that our topic will be connecetd with the concept of identity. Irena proposed a title that would concern the problem of the female identity in the working sphere. Brigita introduced her idea, which was the problem of the adolescent and post-adolescent identity which can be seen in the phenomenon of lenghtening the youth. She also proposed other topics, such as narcissism and the problems of identity in the cyberspace. Sara explained her idea about the problem of the prisoner's identity, with the emphasis on the difference between the prisoner's own identity and the one that is given to him by the society.

Decision: After a quick discussion we decided to pick the topic concerning the problem of the adolescent and post-adolescent identity.

Item 2:

Discussion: We briefly discussed what out working title could be.

Decision: We decided it to be 'The post-adolescent identity status of the youth'.

Item 3:

Discussion: We thought about how our definition would look like and what to include in it.

Decision: Živa volunteered to write the definition of our problem, with a little help from Brigita, who found some statistical data on the subject and will sent them to Živa. She will then write the definition and send it to the rest of the group members for approval.

Item 4:

Discussion: We discussed out satisfaction with the roles in the group and finalized who will do what concerning the writing and publishing of the minutes. We also thought about the date for our next meeting.

Decisions: We agreed that we are happy with the distribution of the roles within the group. Špela and Živa decided that from now one, Špela will take notes during out meetings and Živa will rewrite and publish them. We've also decided that we will finalize the date for our next meeting on Wednesday when we will know what out next engagements will be.

Minutes taker: Živa

Chair: Brigita

MINUTES OF THE SECOND MEETING OF THE PBL PROJECT

held on 17th March, 2010 at FDV

Present: Brigita,  Irena, Špela, Živa, Sara

Absent: Pia

Agenda:

  1. Discussion about research questions.
  2. List of literature.
  3. Any other business.

Item 1:

Discussion: We were talking about our research questions, how many of them should we choose, and what are they supposed to be.

Decision: We decided to form 10 questions for now, and later on we are going to talk, who will answer which one.

Item 2:

Discussion: On this point, we started to talk, what the best literature (for answering the questions) would be.

Decision: We decided that we will use different resources. Some of them are seen above. Following our leader’s advice, we decided to add it as research starts.

Item 3:

Discussion: We were talking about accepting Pia Nikolič as a new member of our team.

Decision:  The request was accepted without a dissentient voice, so now our group has six members.

Discussion: We were also talking about our next meeting.

Decision: We decided that it will be held next Thursday at half past 2 o'clock in the afternoon.

Discussion: Because in a way we are typical students, we really need coffee on our meetings.

Decision: Next time, Špela as a secretary should take care of that :)

Minutes taker: Špela

Chair: Brigita

MINUTES OF THE THIRD MEETING OF THE PBL PROJECT

held on 25th March, 2010 at FDV

Present: Brigita, Sara, Irena, Pia, Živa

Absent: Špela

Agenda:

  1. Task distribution
  2. Title and definition correction
  3. Glossary writing
  4. Discussion about the interview
  5. Discussion about the deadlines
  6. Any other business

Item 1:

Discussion: We began our meeting with a conversation about the distribution of our tasks and who should answer which questions. We soon realized that there are 6 of us and we have 10 questions so a completely equal distribution of the questions is not possible. We then talked about who will answer each question.

Decision: Brigita proposed that we distribute the questions among 5 of us and that the member that will not be answering the questions does the interviews and writes the introduction and conclusion of the report (with help from all of us). We all agreed on this decision and started to talk about who should answer each question. We decided that the first and second questions will be answered by Brigita, 3rd and 4th by Pia, 5th and 6th by Sara, 7th and 8th by Živa and 9th and 10th by Špela. Irena will be responsible for doing the interviews (2 or 3 of them) and finalizing our report with an introduction and a conclusion. She will do the interviews with people she knows that fall in the category of post-adolescents.

Item 2:

Discussion: We were told that out title and definition of the problem is not enough problem-based and that we must improve it. Brigita started with some proposals about a more specific definition of our problem. We all offered some of our ideas. In the end, we decided on one and with the help of all of us, formed it in a way that will fit out research.

Decision: We decided our research will concern the problem of the discordance between the self and the social world in the post-adolescent period, therefore how to harmonize the self image of the post-adolescent with the rules in our society. Živa will finalize the forming of the title and post it on our wiki page. She will also try to correct the definition, which other members will then improve if they find it necessary.

Item 3:

Discussion: Sara remembered us that we must also write at least 10 words in out glossary that will be included on our wiki page. We agreed we will all contribute to it.

Decision: We will write any important less known sociological terms we come across during our research. If possible, we complete this task until next week.

Item 4:

Discussion: Irena already volunteered to do the interviews but was unsure about what questions to include. We were talking about if we should write the questions now or should we wait until we all read some more literature considering out topic.

Decision: We came to the conclusion that other members of the group (the ones answering the questions) will each write at least two questions considering their topic, since answering questions that are not related to our problem or literature is irrelevant. We will all hand these questions to Irena until Monday and form the half-structured interview together.

Item 5:

Discussion: Brigita and Sara informed us that we must finish the report much sooner than we thought. So in order to finish it on time we decided on some deadlines that will help our work go more smoothly.

Decision: First deadline is this Monday, 29th of March, when every member answering any of our problem-related questions must give Irena about 2 questions for her interview. We also decided that we must answer all of our problem-related questions until our next meeting.

Item 6:

Discussion: This was our first meeting with Pia so we accepted her in our group and explained her tasks.

Decision: She will offer help to Živa if needed with writing the minutes of our meetings, answer two questions from our list and cooperate in other ways. She agreed and also gave some great proposals during the whole meeting.

Discussion: Špela, our secretary was absent for this meeting (she informed us of this a week before) so we needed someone else for performing her tasks.

Decision: Irena volunteered to take notes during this meeting.

Discussion: We talked about adorning our wiki page, since our page is the least decorated.

Decision: If we find some appropriate pictures or so, we post it on our site.

Discussion: We discussed when our next meeting should be.

Decision: We decided it to be on Wednesday, 31th March at 12 o’clock.
