Definition:

In order to perform well  organizations need a good communication system. To communicate means to exchange, to interfere ideas, information and data. Communication ensures stability of the organization and decreases the feeling of insecurity in the employees. If bottom-up communication is not well developed this can lead to the problem of instability of the organization. We are going to find out if bottom-up communication is well developed in of  the leading Slovene organizations that provide mobile-phone services.

Literature:

1. Leadership communications: a status report (Clutterbuck, D., Hirst, Sheila)

2. The relationship between org. structure and managment control in hospitals: an elaboration and test of Mintzberg`s professional bureaucracy model ( Abernetty, A.M., Stoelwinder, J.U.)

3. Hotel Managers´ Perceptions of Upward and Downword Communictaion (Betsy Stevens, Jim Hisle; Internation journal of contemporary Hospitality Managment 8/1)

4. Upword Feedback and its Contribution to Employee’s Feeling of Self Determintion (Johhanes Bauer, Regina H. Mudler; Journal of Workplace Learning, vol. 18 No 7/8, 2006)

 Reasearch questions:

 1. What is internal communication?

 2. What is bottom-up communication?

 3. What influence does organizational culture have on bottom- up communication?

 4. Ways of communication or means used for communication in the organization

 5. What are pitfalls of bottom- up communication?

 6. Feedback in bottom- up communication

Discussion of issues:

Feel free to add new topics and debates.

Feel obliged to add new comments.

Literature:

Andi: I found some new literature about our topic All the new stuff will be copy/pasted tonight on our private forum.

I checked two of them (the most interesting) . But there are two problems, the first is that both of them are in Slovene, the second is that both of them are graduation theses :)))... So further searching to achieve/find basic/root/elementary literature will be necessary.

1. Vpliv komunikacije in organizacijske kulture na upravljanje znanja in sprememb v organizaciji (author: Lejla Kmetič, mentor: dr. Ivan Svetlik)

2. Interna glasila v komuniciranju z zaposlenimi (author: Živa Grgič, mentor:  Unknown)

Even if these two works are not strictly connected with our core/main problem we can find a lot of useful advice and traces inside. Proofs needed?! Check Interna glasila v komuniciranju z zaposlenimi (page 11 second paragraph). You can find citations/quotes of people who discovered problems about bottom-up communication... ;)

 ...So who will read what?

Manca:  I took your advice and voila - some corrections are made   But I think that someone should do it again, because I probably missed something (sorry) I will also read Interna glasila v komuniciranju z zaposlenimi (author: Živa Grgič, mentor:  Unknown)

Andi: I found some problems with adding and downloading literature on our internal (Google) forum. So I decided to distribute the literature manually. We will do that before the TDS class.

WE !!NEED!! ALL THE LITERATURE WRITTEN ON THIS PAGE TILL 27. OF APRIL!!! PLEASE IF YOU READ THIS  MESSAGE (HARD TO MISS/AVOID IT IF YOU ARE ON THE WIKI) ASSURE THAT ALL YOUR LITERATURE IS INCLUDED IN THE LIST... FULLFIL THE LIST!

Page design:

Andi: Some of the other groups have really nice looking pages. Are we happy with our ˝Spartan˝ design??? Answer please.

Manca: I don`t think that the form/design of our page is so importanat; all that matters is what we learn from it!!! So, let’s just continue our good work and do the assignments properly...

Andi: I agree. But the page right now looks strange... The problem is that I do not know why... In the edit mode everything looks O.K.

Andi: Now the page is normal http://fdvenglish2pbl.pbwiki.com/images/smiley/msn/shades_smile.gif  (thanks to the advice of our teacher --> see comments)...  What now? Opinions needed...http://fdvenglish2pbl.pbwiki.com/images/smiley/msn/confused_smile.gif

Presentation:

Andi: For our presentation it will be very nice to apply some dynamic elements in its main part....

Not just to make a bigger and better impression but to give something drastic to the crowd, something that is hard to forget... so the pedagogic/scientific/research message will gain on the effect and as a consequence,  it will be imprinted in the minds of our colleagues for longer http://fdvenglish2pbl.pbwiki.com/images/smiley/msn/angel_smile.gif

Maybe it would be nice to have some examples of bottom-up communication to show. Especially the bad pratice (more funny acts;) )... Or maybe a comparation of a good and bad practice?!? Or examples in which different channels of communication are used to communicate... Or... suggestion needed: P

I am thinking about some films in which the communication with the managment is shown...  (the list goes from concrete ideas to the abstract): Fight Club, The Employee Of The Month, The Corporation, Anger Management, Little Miss Sunshine, Babylon, The Butterfly Effect 2, The Matrix, The Gladiator,

 Any additional idea?!!!?????? Comments...

Manca: It is true that we need to impress the "crowd" so they can remember us.. I agree with examples that we talked about, but... now I do not see a lot of connections with the films that you recommended.. tell more specifics http://fdvenglish2pbl.pbwiki.com/images/smiley/msn/embaressed_smile.gifany other suggestions from others?http://fdvenglish2pbl.pbwiki.com/images/smiley/msn/teeth_smile.gif

Andi: Happy to see you collaborating... Here you are with the explanation: in the Fight Club there  is a scene of bottom-up conversation... Do you remember the self-fight in the chief office? The Employee Of The Month is all about the conflict between the staff and the middle-line management (we just need to find an appropriate short scene in which the problem is well highlighted), Anger Management is all about communication, the main character has a lot of problems at his working place (again: we just need to find an appropriate short scene in which the problem is well highlighted), and so we can say for LMS, Babylon, TBE2...

For Matrix and The Gladiator I have different ideas. In the film the boses (chief fighters) often have to trust in their warriors (employeehttp://fdvenglish2pbl.pbwiki.com/images/smiley/msn/shades_smile.gif). In a specefic scene in Matrix if I am not wrong there is a moment when Morpheus needs a specific service (an urgent need to know how to pilot a war helicopterhttp://fdvenglish2pbl.pbwiki.com/images/smiley/msn/teeth_smile.gif)...

Well... the hard task to use some scenes from films will become much easier if you try to use more imagination

Manca: what´s wrong with this page?! the size of writting is changing... arrggh

Andi: I do not know what is going wrong with the page... I will try to FIX IT at the weekend.

Yeah I agree, we must not exaggerate  with the  technology... my list is long just because I think we must have a large selection  to make a BETTER selection

manca: that´s the word

Manca: ahaaa..  i get it now and my imagination is doing fine - but you need to understand that i haven´t seen all these movies  well, yeah, we just need to find appropriate scenes and include them, but we shouldnt exaggerate with scenes from movies... just my opinion, you know

Absent: /

Agenda:

1. Defining our problem

2. Distribution of takst

3. Any other business

Item 1:

We focused on questions about internal communication. We wanted to research communication on FDV. Andy suggested researching feedback in organizations. Barbara proposed that we research  Bologna system but this can be a problem. Katja thought that it would be interesting to research how leaders of our organization influence on communication between professors and students.

Item 2:

Decision:

Until the next meeting we must find literature and then we will decide how to continue.

Assignments:

All will find out literature.

Katja and Barbara will find out something about bottom-up communication.

Branka and Manca will try to find literature about professional bureaucracy.

Andi and Dejan will find out literature about feedback.

Item 3:

Manca proposed that we soon find out literature and have another meeting.

The next meeting will be held on Tuesday, 6 March, 2007 at 10.am at FDV library.

Minutes taker: Katja Rožič

 Chair: Branka Jovanovič

The minutes of the Second meeting of the group NO.NAME.ORG

held on 6th March at FDV library

Present: Manca Revinšek, Branka Jovanovič, Katja Rožič, Barbara Čurman, Dejan Gatarič, Andi Bertok

Absent: /

Agenda:

1. Changing our topic

2. Literature

3. Reasearch question

4. Other business

ITEM 1 ( Changing our topic) :

We all had a lot of problems with our topic Feedback information; from students to teachers. After discussing at our meeting we decided that the best decision is to change it because the topic did not lead us anywhere. Our new topic now is Bottom-up communication. We all agreed.

ITEM 2 (Literature) :

We have a new topic so we started searching literature. We found some appropriate literature: Manca found a very good article about internal communication and she will study it. However, we decided that the best thing is that each of us should be looking for the literature based on research question. We agreed on what each member will look for.

ITEM 3 ( Reasearch questions) :

We formed 6 research questions.

ITEM 4 ( Assignments:) :

Till Tuesday:

- Manca will have to read an article about internal communication

- Branka will have to read an article about disadvantages in bottom-up communication

- Brabara will have to find some literature about bottom- up communication

- Dejan will read about canals in bottom- up communication

- Andy will try to find a literature about feedback in bottom-up communication

- Katja will try to contact the organization

The next meeting will be held on Tuesday, 16th March 2007 at 10 am at FDV library!

Minutes taker: Branka Jovanovič

The minutes of the Third meeting of the group NO.NAME.ORG

held on 16th March at FDV library

Present: Branka Jovanovič, Katja Rožič, Brabar Čurman, Dejan Gatarič, Manca Revinšek, Andi Bertok

Absent: /

Agenda:

1) Distribution of tasks

2) Literature

3) Any other business

ITEM 1:

On the meeting which was held today, we were discussing about the literature (is the chosen literature suitable for our topic), assignments (what has each member read till today). Dejan is still studying literature about canals in bottom up communication, Branka read an article about disadvantages and she thinks it is very useful, Manca is searching some more appropriate literature about internal communication. Katja has contacted the organization, Andi and Barbara  are searching more specific literature. We all think that we proceeded a lot because at the beginning we had a lot of problems with topic, definition and especially literature.

ITEM 2:

Andi went to professor Jana Nadoh Bergoč to ask her if we have good research question, hypothesis and the definition of our new topic. She was very satisfied but she also said that we must be careful while we will search for the literature. Our task till next week is to find literature which is more specific.

ITEM 3:

Our next meeting will be held on Tuesday, 20th March at 10am at FDV library!!! Do not forget!!!

Minutes taker:Branka Jovanovič

Chair:Branka Jovanovič

The minutes of the fourth e-meeting of the group NO.NAME.ORG

held on the 5th of April.

Present: Branka Jovanovič, Katja Rožič, Brabar Čurman, Dejan Gatarič, Manca Revinšek, Andi Bertok

Absent: /

Agenda:

a)       1.Presentation

      2. Any other buisness

ITEM 1:

Dicussion:

We  discussed about the presentation. This was a general debate with no particular goals. Everybody agreed that the presentation part is at least so important as the content of the report. So we decided to take some risks and try a new approach of delivering a  presentation.

ITEM 2:

Until the next meeting everyone must think and find out some ideas for the presentation. Our main problem is that we will not have enough time. That implicates we can not afford any kind of error or unexpected technology trouble. Complicated scenes might not be understood correctly by part of the audience, or even worse by all the audience.

Our next meeting will be held the next day after the exam.

Hi, Andi. Yes, your page has improved a lot. The next step is language and grammar corrections. One of you can come during my office hours on Monday and we can make some corrections together. P.S.: Have you replied prof. Jana Nadoh Bergoč?

Hello, Andi. The problems that you experience are related to the new editor that PBwiki providers introduced a few weeks ago. Editing is easier than before but it will take some time until the PBwiki team can make it work perfectly. <<>> Perhaps this can help: 1) Go to your page and click 'edit'. 2) Then select all the content and cut it out so that the page is completely empty. 3) Paste the cut content into a Word document and edit the text there. 4) Then copy the Word text into your empty wiki page with CTRL+V. <<>> Try it out. If anything goes wrong you can still revert your wiki page to the previous version. Good luck! <<>> BTW, your page already looks fine.

Hi, No.name.org, As you write in your minutes you have moved forward with your project, which is OK. <<<>>> At the top of your page (below the research questions), add the distribution of tasks. <<<>>> In your minutes, add »The minutes of the...« in the title. <<<>>> Your first agenda item does not only contain the distribution of tasks but also action-item follow up, don't you agree? And your second item (Literature) is not about literature at all but about your contact with prof. Jana Nadoh Bergoč. Try to rename the items so that they match your discussion or paste the parts of your discussion under the corresponding items. <<<>>> I'll help you improve the language in the following weeks.

Hello, Here are a few suggestions to improve your page: >>>>> The definition: In Minutes 2 you write that you are going to research a new problem but you still have the old title. >>>>> Definition of your (new) problem: It is missing (read my previous comment).
>>>>> Dicsussion of issues: Correct the mistakes such as 'althougt all the problems'. We did that in class, remember?

>>>>> Minutes 1: Correct the mistakes such as interanlly communication'. We did that in class too. Do you remember?
>>>>> Minutes 2: These are better written than the previous ones. In Item 3 cut the research questions out and paste them below the definition of the problem at the top of your page. In Item 3 include your discussion of the research questions. Hello, I can see your PBL title but you will agree that it needs some improvement. I also miss some proper definition of your problem which you will have to do in the following days. Please include in it what you find problematic in relation to your topic. Read again the sample definition in the blog and remember how we analysed it. Your definition will probably not be perfect straight away. But you can always come back to it and refine it further. *** You posted the minutes of the meeting. During the following days, try to improve the language, please. Look for spelling mistakes, such as 'takst' (= tasks), add 's' to the verbs in the third person sigular, e.g. ' Katja think', check your grammar and correct things like 'internally communication', 'interested research', 'ours organizations', 'we like to define communication', 'on our school' and many others. I suggest that all members proof-read the text because each will detect and improve something. Thus, you'll get a much better version of your minutes and also other sections of the page. *** I miss your list of literature and I wonder why it is not here.

Although there are no assignments published yet in your page, I can see some interesting discussion going on here which, I hope, will lead to some more postings later on today.

Hi, everyone. I can see from your discussion that you already agreed on the title of your PBL project. But I could not find your definition of the problem. Post it as soon as possible, okay?
