Problem presentation
Title: __The Perception of Roma Communities at the Ljubljana faculty of social sciences (FDV)__
Problem definition:
Groups of the Roma community have had a hard stand in the history - not only of Sloveia, but in most European countries. In Slovenia they are still not accepted in large parts of the society. The case of the Strojan family gathering around in all Slovenian medias these days gives evidence of these poeple's difficulties of integration. We can imagine that one part of this problem is missing information and negative stereotypes about Roma, also among social science students. Therefore we would like to know how this actual problem is percepted by the students of our faculty and which stereotypes exist among Slovenian students towards the Roma population.
Research questions:
Main question 1: What can FDV students do to improve the Strojan family's situation?
1. What is the current situation of Roma families in Slovenia like?
2. Which political and legal framework does Slovenia have concerning the Roma?
3. Is there any support for this minority by the goverment's side?
4. Are there stereotypes about Roma at FDV?
5. How much do FDV students know about the case of the Strojan Family?
6. What do we know about the history of Slovenia and Roma?
7. Which Slovenian NGO's support the Roma?
8. How do Slovenian media present the case of the Strojan family?
9. How are the Roma organised in Slovenia?
10. How are Roma treated in other European countries?

Questionary for FDV students about the case and their view of "gypsies"

Agenda:
1. Action-item follow up
2. Distribution of tasks
3. Any other business
Item 1:
We find a new topic because “Stereotypes” was very hard for a quantitative research and methodology.
Item 2:
Discussion:
Groups of the Roma community have had a hard stand in the history - not only of Sloveia, but in most European countries. In Slovenia they are still not accepted in large parts of the society. The case of the Strojan family gathering around in all Slovenian medias these days gives evidence of these poeple's difficulties of integration. We would like to know how this actual problem is percepted by the students of our faculty and if any stereotypes among Slovenian students towards the Roma population play a role.
Decision:
The Perception of Roma Communities at FDV
Assignments:
Klara: find NGO's and expert through her department
Others: engage Slovenian friends for news about the Strojan case
All: create questionary at the next meeting (wednesday, 22.11.)
The next meeting will be held on Wed, 22 November, 2006 at 10 AM at FDV library.
Minutes taker:
Chair:
Minutes of the 4th group meeting
held on 23 November, 12.00 2006 at FDV library
Present: Blaž, Samuel, Pavel
Agenda:
1. Action-item follow up
2. Discussion
3. Task distribution
Item 1:
Samuel has reformulated the definition of the problem in order to include the FDV students and their stereotypes about Roma in a bether way.
Item 2: (summarised discussion)
Short discussion about whether the Roma in Slovenia are really a problem:
Blaž: they cause trouble.
Samuel: Slovenians probably don't know them.
Blaž: In Prekmurje there is also a community of Roma and there it works fine. Maybe this is because, that family is more traditional.
Samuel: If we want to ask FDV students about this case, then they must be part of the problem. But we can hardly proof that in advance. How can we relate the Strojan problem to the FDV students?
Blaž: We could just describe the Strojan case (they don't find a place to stay) and then focus on one part of this problem, on one main question: "how can FDV students contribute to the solution of this problem?" Maybe we find out that this question is not enough, then we'll formulate a second one, for example about the goverment. But we cannot cover all aspects of this problem.
Pavel: Yes, but we should include some theories, like Mill's idea of self-definition by definition of the enemy/other.
Samuel: Or the theory about segregation by Elias.
Decision:
We have the historical background, the legal and political frame, current stereotypes and the theoretical basis as a description of the problem. Then we follow our main question (see above) or questions, find answers an make a conclusion out of the answers. In order to answer the questions we shall ask the students about their knowledge and opinion about Roma and the Strojan case. Therefore we could destribute questionaries in lectures and collect opinions in an open book.
Item 3:
Pavel: bring a sheet of Mill's theory to the next meeting
Blaž: bring a cronology of the Strojan case to the next meeting
Samuel: put the minutes of this meeting on the wiki
Next meeting: monday, 27.11. at 17.00, FDV library

Klara, I just remembered that we forgot to do the questionnaire the other day. I hope you managed to do it anyway.

María's suggestion is interesting. Since you are a diverse group you could perhaps address your PBL problem from a wider perspective and include information on the Roma people's status in Spain, the Czech Republic and Switzerland, and find out how similar problems are solved there.
P.S.: María, when you log in the wiki, don't forget ro enter your name and email address, okay? :-)

I can see you considered a few possible themes. Which one have you selected as your PBL theme?
