HOW TO COORDINATE WORK AND FAMILY LIFE:

EXPECTATIONS OF THE YOUTH IN  MODERN SOCIETY

DEFINITION :

Throughout the history of humankind society has been experiencing dramatic changes. Not only that the historic, economic and political circumstances have evolved but also transformations in its basic structure and  institutions emerged. Consequently changes of work and family, within these concepts themselves as well as in their interaction, were inevitable. The ever more important problem which the modern man is facing is how to balance family and work life. Here the young are especially affected by this since they are barely entering the world of grown-ups and have little or no experience in a very competitive labour market. The employers expect that in times of modern technology like the Internet, mobile phones and e-mail, their employees will be available to them whenever and wherever. Young people are aware of these recent trends and because of them they are literally forced to choose between work or starting a family considering that they can not give their 100 percent at work, as employers expect nothing less, and simultaneously spend quality time with the family. What lies ahead is a mystery and only those who will be able to achieve just the right combination will minimise the conflict between work and family role.

HYPOTHESES:

Hypothesis 1: The young today create families at a later age than they used to in the past.

Hypothesis 2:  Employers do not take into consideration the needs of the young when it comes to creating or taking time for one’s   family.

RESEARCH  QUESTIONS :

1. How do the young see the family?

2. Which are the main differences between  young families in the past and present day?

3. What are work-family arrangements?

4. Is the problem of work and family coordination only a personal issue or has it become a public one?

5. Why do young people decide to start a family at a later age than they use to in the past?

6.  How have the changes of values altered the work-family relation?

7.  In what way have the changes in work affected the expectations of the youth?

8.  What are the advantages and disadvantages of employing the young?

9.  Can the conflict between family and work life be resolved?

10. Are there any organisations providing help for young families on the labour market?

11. How does the state with its legislation regulate the relationship between family and work and to what extent?

MINUTES OF THE MEETINGS:

MINUTES OF THE 1st MEETING “Problem based learning project”

The meeting was held on the 24th of February from 9.30 am to 10.10 am at the FDV library.

Present: Ema Javornik, Talija Ukmar, Ana Cerkovnik

Absent: Bojana Gnezda

Meeting agenda:     1. Selecting a topic

                                 2. Selecting a title

                                 3. Defining the problem

ITEM 1:

DISCUSSION: All of the present group members agreed that we should choose a topic that all of us find interesting. We looked at all of the possible topics, and in the end narrowed our choice down to two. The topics that we were deciding between were Expectations among young people and Work and family. After some thought, we decided to choose Work and family.

ITEM 2:

DISCUSSION: Talija suggested that the title within our chosen topic should be Ethics in work. Ana proposed that it might be a good idea that we concentrate on current problems. Ema thought that we should also include young individuals and the problems they are facing at work.

DECISION: We tried to include the ideas of all present members, so we agreed on the title: YOUTH, FAMILY AND WORK.

ITEM 3:

DEFINITION OF THE PROBLEM: Our main problem that we are going to focus on is: How to coordinate work and family: Expectations of the youth in the modern society?

The next meeting will be held on Tuesday, 3th of March, at 13:30 am.

Minutes taker: Ema

MINUTES OF THE 2nd MEETING “Problem based learning project”

The meeting was held on the 3th of March from 1.40 pm to 2.45 pm at the FDV library.

Present: Bojana Gnezda, Talija Ukmar, Ana Cerkovnik

Absent: Ema Claire Javornik Kregeen

Meeting agenda:      1. Action-item follow up

                                  2. Hypothesis and research questions

                                  3. Literature

                                  4. Wiki page

                                  5. Writting of the report

                                  6. Any other business

ITEM 1:

DISCUSSION: Talija reported that we complited all our tasks of the previous week in the appointed time. We chose the theme, wrote the definition and published the minutes in our Wiki page.

ITEM 2:

DISCUSSION: On the basis of the two hypotheses which we formed last week, during the lecture of the subject Sociology of work, every member of our group will form at least three research questions. We all suggested that the deadline for forming questions is the evening of the 5th March.

DECISION: We have to send our research questions to all members of our group via e-mail.

ITEM 3:

DISCUSSION: The literature we have already found in the FDV library last week will be the object of consideration in the next few days. We will try to skim all the chosen literature and decide if it is suitable for our theme. In case that the literature will not be well suited to our assignment or will not be enough extensive we will search for additional sources including web sources.

DECISION: Each of us has to go through the allotted literature and decide whether it is useful or not for our theme. Talija’s task is to collect our opinions about the literature and then publish the chosen literature in our Wiki page.

ITEM 4:

DISCUSSION: It is necessary that every single member of group Spring regularly checks our Wiki page and supplements the texts if needed. Bojana suggested we should first type the texts in Word and then copy them to the Wiki page for easier editing.

DECISION: In the next week we all have to work on our Wiki page, meaning we should publish texts, correct mistakes, add photos or edit the page.

ITEM 5:

DISCUSSION: We discussed that it may be most efficient to make our report together, meaning everyone will write their part of it at the same time and in the same place. Working like that will enable us to solve problems that might occur and supplement each other’s work.

DECISION: We must set a date and a place for group writing of the report.

ITEM 6:

DISCUSSION: The next meeting will be held on Tuesday, 10th of March, at 1:30 pm.

Minutes taker: Ana

MINUTES OF THE 3rd MEETING “Problem based learning project”

The meeting was held on the 9th of March from 12.30 pm to 13.00 pm at the FDV library.

Present: Ema Javornik, Talija Ukmar, Ana Cerkovnik and Bojana Gnezda

Meeting agenda: 1. Action - item follow up

                             2. Task distribution

                             3. Report details

                             4. Any other business

ITEM 1:

DISCUSSION: We went over all the minor details of our report. Talija confirmed that we have all of the needed literature and that we carrieed out all our tasks of the previous week in due time.

ITEM 2:

DISCUSSION: Talija suggested that each of us should decide which part of the report we would like to write. The other thing that we talked about was the empirical part of our report. We started to think about what kind and how many questions we want to include in our survey and interview and also what kind of respondents are we looking for.

DECISION: All of us agreed with the suggestion and we decided that Ema will define certain terms and compare the life of young families in the past and today, Bojana will write about legislative forms of regulating work and family and Talija and Ana will take over the empirical part of our report. We decided that our survey will include ten questions and that we will conduct the survey among students on our faculty.

ITEM 3:

DISCUSSION: All of us agreed that it would be helpful if we wrote the report together, therefore we talked about the most suitable time to meet.

DECISION: We decided that we will meet on Tuesday after we have all finished with classes and start writing our report. All of us have to bring different literature that we intend to use.

ITEM 4:

DISCUSSION: We discused different problems that we have regarding the report and the wiki page, and found out that Bojana can best edit it, thus she suggested that if any of us have any problems updating our page or anything else, we should talk to her and she will help us with it.

The next meeting will be held on Tuesday, 17th of March, at 1:30 pm.

Minutes taker: Ema

MINUTES OF THE 4th MEETING “Problem based learning project”

The meeting was held on the 17th of March from 13.25 pm to 14.08 pm at the FDV library.

Present: Ema Javornik, Bojana Gnezda, Ana Cerkovnik and Talija Ukmar

Meeting agenda: 1. Action - item follow up

                             2. Wiki editing

                             3. Report writing

                             4. Any other business

ITEM 1:

DISCUSSION: Talija confirmed that our group carried out all the 3rd week tasks in the required time. We distributed the roles according to the literature each one of the members had to go over.

ITEM 2:

DISCUSSION: Group's task for week 5 is to add glossary and minutes of the 4th meeting to the Wiki page. We also have to correct some spelling mistakes in the research questions. Ema suggested each one of the members picks out at least 3 phrases which would be inserted in the glossary.

DECISION: All of us agreed with the suggestion. Thus we set Thursday evening as the final day to send selected phrases for the glossary via e-mail to each other.

ITEM 3:

DISCUSSION: The report is composed of theoretical and empirical part. For the latter we decided to use two empirical methods, that is questionnaire and  interview. The questionnaire would be distributed among students of FDV and interview send to one mail and one female HR manager in two different companies. To do so we selected a few questions for both methods.

DECISION: Together we reached a decision that both, questionnaire and  interview, would be prepared and allotted until the end of this week. The analysis would then be conducted next week.  A similar decision was reached about the theoretical part for which Ema and Bojana have to write their part until Wednesday.

ITEM 4:

DISCUSSION: The next meeting will be held on Tuesday, 24th of March, at 1:30 pm.

Minutes taker: Talija
