WOMEN BALANCING WORK AND PRIVATE LIFE

 Definition:

During the last decades women have acquired more important roles in the employment sector. As a consequence they face the problems of balancing employment with their private lives. Exhaustion, the lack of time spent with the family and lower number of children are only some of them. As different employments and professions exist, there are different patterns of balancing work and private life. Our goal is to research this patterns, find out which are the most common and offer some solutions.

  5.

Questions:

  1. Do women do any work duties at home?
  2. What does work mean to women?
  3. How many hours on average do women work per day?
  4. Are there any connections between the kind of work and number of children that women have?
  5. Do women think they have enough time for both – the household and their work?
  6. Which is, in women's opinion the priority – private life or their employment?
  7. Do they have any free time?
  8. Which kinds of work allow women more free time?
  9. Do women who work longer hours than average have a housekeeper?
  10. Do employers have any influence on their private lives? (contracts, maternity leave…)

6.

Distribution of tasks:

Janža and Natalija will find literature and write the theoretical part of our report. They will also compose the introduction and conclusion.

Nina and Dragana will separately interview two women. After that will Nina analyse the interviews and Dragana will suggest some possible solutions of our problem.

Sabina will compose the questionnaire and analyse the results. We all will help her investigate.

Minutes of the 1st meeting:

Minutes of the meeting »Problem Based Learning Project«

held on 10 October, 2007 at FDV library

Present: Dragana, Janža, Natalija, Nina, Sabina

Agenda:

  1. Focusing the topic and definition of the problem
  2. Research questions
  3. Any other business

Item 1:

Discussion:

Nina suggested that we focus on women within our topic (»Balancing employment and private life«) which we had already chosen at the Sociology of work class. Dragana remarked that some women keep working when they come home but others do not so we could research these differences. Natalija added that we learnt about some patterns that women use at the Sociology class last year so we could use them in our theoretical part.

Decision:

We agreed about the title in which we focus on women and the definition.

Item 2:

Discussion:

We all suggested some questions and Nina wrote them down.

Decision:

We all agreed about research questions.

Item 3:

Discussion:

Sabina proposed that we could do a questionnaire for women which would help us answer some of the research questions and Janža added that we also could carry out two interviews with women who have different types of work and then compare them.

Decision:

We all agreed with Sabina's and Janža's proposals and determined some assignments that should be done until the next meeting.

Assignments:

Janža and Natalija will look for some literature.

Nina and Dragana will think about the most suitable candidates for interviews.

Sabina will think about some questions for the questionnaire and note some ideas.

The next meeting will be held on Wednesday, 17 October, 2007 at 11.45 AM at FDV library.

Minutes taker: Nina

Chair: Dragana

Minutes of 2nd meeting:

Minutes of the meeting »Problem Based Learning Project«

held on 17 October, 2007 at FDV library

Present: Dragana, Janža, Natalija, Nina, Sabina

Agenda:

  1. Action-item follow up
  2. Revision of the title and definition
  3. Distribution of tasks
  4. List of literature
  5. Agreement with group Ladies

Item 1:

All assignments from the previous meeting have been done.

Item 2:

Discussion:

As professor Zorko recommended us, we changed the title into a statement and completed the definition. Nina suggested the title “Women spread between work and private life”. Natalija, Sabina and Janža listed some examples of major problems women confront with and Dragana remembered some possible solutions of the problem we research.

Decision:

We all agreed about the title and new definition.

Item 3:

Discussion:

Janža and Natalija said they would write the introduction and conclusion but the others suggested we should do it together if we have time. Dragana said that she would look for some solutions of the problem so that the interviews could be analysed only by Nina.

Decision:

We all agreed about our tasks and assignments.

Assignments:

Janža and Natalija will write the theoretical part until the next meeting.

Sabina will search for some questionnaires which have already been done and have the results published on the Internet.

Item 4:

Decision:

As Janža and Natalija will search for literature, they will write the literature review. They will publish the resources which they will use. If anyone of us uses some other literature later, she will also add it in the wiki.

Item 5:

Discussion:

Because the group Ladies warned us (on the PBL forum) about similarity of our topics, we discussed it at our meeting. Ivana (Ladies) said they would focus more on the stress aspect of the problem and Janža said that we would focus more on private life of women so that our research would not be the same.

Decision:

Both groups agreed.

The next meeting will be held on Wednesday, 24 October, 2007 at 11.45 AM at FDV library.

Chair: Dragana

Minutes of the 3rd meeting:

Minutes of the meeting »Problem Based Learning Project«

held on 24 October, 2007 at FDV library

Present: Dragana, Janža, Natalija, Nina, Sabina

Agenda:

  1. Action-item follow up
  2. Selecting words for the glossary
  3. Any other bussiness

Item 1:

Discussion:

Janža and Natalija told us that they found some suitable literature, read it and created an idea for our theoretical part. They presented the key points which they will expand until Saturday.

Item 2:

Discussion:

We all suggested about some unknown words which we already had found in the literature and were interesting to us.

Decision:

We decided that we would post 10 words we remembered at our meeting and later, when we found some more, subsequently published them on the wiki.

Assignments:

Nina will translate the words and write their explanations in English. When any other member finds some new and interesting words she will publish it on the Wiki.

Item 3:

Discussion:

Dragana suggested that she and Nina compose the questions for the interviews soon and agree on the way they would interview each person.

Decision:

We all agreed.

Assignments:

Dragana and Nina will separately write some questions for the interviews and then compare and coordinate them.

Sabina will revise the questionnaire.

Janža and Natalija will finish our theoretical part.

The next meeting will be held on Tuesday, 30 October, 2007 at 10.10 AM at FDV library.

 Minutes of the 4th meeting:

Minutes of the meeting »Problem Based Learning Project«

held on 30 October, 2007 by email

Present: Dragana, Natalija, Nina, Sabina

Absent: Janža

Agenda:

  1. Action-item follow up
  2. Report

Item 1:

All the assignments from the previous meeting have been done.

Item 2:

Discussion:

Dragana suggested that only one person puts the report in order after all of us send our contributions to her. Sabina said that we do not have to decide who will do it yet because we do not know how much work each will have with her contributions. If none wants to do it, Dragana as a chair will decide who will.

Decision:

We decided that until Thursday night all the contributions must be sent to the person who will put the reports in order. In case none has time to do it, Dragana chooses two members who will. Until Thursday night it should be known who will do it, so that the other members know where to send their contributions. The report should be finished by Friday night and sent to all the members who should check it. On Saturday one report must be sent to professor Trbanc and another to professor Zorko, both by email.

Assignment:

In case none has time to do the reports, Dragana until Thursday night decides who will do it and let everyone know about her decision.
