Discussion of issues

Issue 1: Deciding about the research topic

memeber 1 (Jasmina): Learning techniques of the students

memeber 2 (Barbara): I agree with Jasmina.

memeber 3 (Marko): I agree with Jasmina, too.

Decision 1: Learning techniques of the students

Issue 2: Refining the PBL problem

Discussion: We had a discussion about refining our PBL problem. Barbara proposed several titles and we decided to take one of them.

Decision 2: Lack of use of learning techniques among the Faculty of Social Sciences students

Learning techniques can be a useful way to gain knowledge easier than just by simply reading plain text in a book. Most of us are more or less familiar with them but how often do we actually use them? We will carry out a survey among the students of Faculty of Social Sciences and try to answer this question and find out why this is so.

10 research questions:

1. What learning techniques do students find most useful?

2. What learning techniques do students use most frequently?

3. How often do students use each of the learning techniques?

4. What learning techniques are least used by the students?

5. Why are some learning techniques least used by the students?

6. Is there a connection between the amount of time spent on preparing for an exam and using the learning techniques?

7. Do students who are more successful use learning techniques more frequently?

8. Do students feel the learning technique they use most frequently is effective enough and does not take too much time?

9. Would students like to be given some good advice on how to learn faster and more effectively?

10. How to encourage students to use learning techniques more frequently while studying?

Literature:

1. Buzan, Tony (1980): Delaj z glavo. Dopisna delavska univerza Univerzum, Ljubljana.

2. Makarovič, Jan (1984): Misel in sporočilo. DDU Univerzum, Ljubljana.

3. Marentič Požarnik, Barica (1980): Dejavniki in metode uspešnega učenja. DDU Univerzum, Ljubljana.

4. Pečjak, Vid (1977): Poti do znanja. Metode uspešnega učenja. Cankarjeva založba, Ljubljana.

5. Pečjak, Vid (1993): Pripravljanje na izpit. Samozaložba, Ljubljana.

6. Pečjak, Vid (1994): Hitro in uspešno učenje. Samozaložba, Ljubljana.

7. Russell, Peter (1987): Knjiga o možganih. Državna založba Slovenije, Ljubljana.

8. Svantesson, Ingemar (1992): Miselni vzorci in spomin: uspešne tehnike za boljšo uporabo možganov. Cankarjeva založba, Ljubljana.

9. The survey carried out among The Faculty of Social Sciences students.

Distribution of tasks:

1. Jasmina will write the theoretical part of the PBL report.

2. Marko and Barbara will analyze the survey results and write about them in the PBL report.

3. All group members will carry out the survey among The Faculty of Social Sciences students.

etc.

Minutes of the 1st group meeting

Minutes of the meeting »Problem Based Learning Project«

held on 8 November, 2006 at FDV exit (the new one)

Present: Jasmina Sajko, Marko Kovačević, Barbara Poličnik

Agenda:

1. Refining the PBL problem

2. Planning work and distribution of tasks

Discussion:

Barbara proposed several possible titles and Jasmina and Marko chose one of them.

Decision:

Lack of use of learning techniques among the Faculty of Social Sciences students

Item 2:

Discussion:

Barbara proposed carrying out a survey among the students of Faculty of social sciences to find out what methods (if any) students use while studying. Jasmina and Marko were in favour of that.

Decision:

We will carry out a survey among the Faculty of Social Sciences students.

Assignments:

Jasmina will draft a survey.

Marko will search for the literature and help Jasmina at drafting a survey.

Barbara will search for the literature and help Jasmina at drafting a survey, too.

The next meeting will be held on Wednesday, 15 October, 2006 at 4 PM at the FDV exit (the new one).

Minutes of the meeting »Problem Based Learning Project«

held on 14 November, 2006 at FDV exit (the new one)

Present: Jasmina Sajko, Marko Kovačević, Barbara Poličnik

Agenda:

1. Action-item follow up and finishing the survey

2. Writing 10 research questions

3. Writing the literature

4. Distribution of tasks

Item 1:

All assignments from the previous meeting have been carried out. Barbara will read all the suggested survey questions from all the group members and put them together into a survey. Then she will send it to the other group members via e-mail to confirm it.

Item 2:

Discussion:

Barbara wrote 10 research questions. Jasmina and Marko were in favour of them.

Decision:

We will use the research questions Barbara wrote.

Item 3:

Discussion:

Barbara told us she had already found some books about learning and learning techniques. We need some to use as a reference at writing the theoretical part of the PBL report.

Decision:

Marko and Jasmina agreed it was a very good idea to use the books Barbara had already found. We will also use the survey results revealed in the survey we will carry out among The Faculty of Social Sciences students.

Item 4:

Discussion:

Jasmina offered herself to write the theoretical part of the PBL report. Marko and Barbara were in favour of that and agreed it was the best solution that they both analyze the survey results and write in the PBL report about them.

Decision and assignments:

Jasmina will write the theoretical part of the PBL report.

Marko and Barbara will analyze the survey results and write about them in the PBL report.

All group members will carry out the survey among The Faculty of Social Sciences students.
