Unemployment rates for graduates of sociology in Slovenia

Definition:

In Slovenia there is an increasing number of University graduates who are not able to get an employment once they finish their study.

There is also a concern in employability for the students of Sociology. The number of unemployed is quite high and those who are not able to get a job end at the Employment Service of Slovenia after graduation or they find a fixed-term work in a different proffesion.

In our PBL assignment we are going to focus on the reasons for unemployment of sociologists and what could be the proper steps to reduce the high rate in Slovenia.

Research questions:

    1. How high is the rate of unemployment for graduates of Sociology in Slovenia?

    2. What are the reasons for high unemployment?

    3. Is gender inequality present in the process of hiring graduates of Sociology?

    4. What are the proper steps Slovenia could take to reduce the high rate of unemployment for graduates of     Sociology?

    5. How prospective is this type of study when considering variety of employment positions?

 Minutes of the 1st e-meeting »Problem Based Learning Project«

Held on 22 February 2008

Present: Rado Daradan, Katja Drenik, Nataša Hočevar, Katja Kranjc Črt Podlogar, Jožica Skube

Absent: /

Agenda:

1.      Discussion about the PBL project

2.      Selection of the topic

3.      Defining the problem

4.      Defining research questions

5.      Other issues

Item 1:

Discussion:

We wanted to connect the PBL project with the Urban regeneration: sociological perspective course but professor Hočevar said that the PLB project is not a suitable way of working for his course.

Decision:

We decided our PLB project will be exclusively for the English course.

Item 2:

Discussion:

Katja D. proposed a topic concerning unemployment. We all agreed with the idea because unemployment is nowadays a big problem and individuals in Slovenia must cope with it. Nataša thought that we need a more specific topic which could be unemployment of graduates of Sociology. Črt then formed the title of our topic.

Decision:

We all agreed that the topic of our assignment will be: Unemployment rates for graduates of Sociology in Slovenia.

Item 3:

Discussion:

We discussed the problem and how we should define it. Jožica did an Internet search and formed our definition.

Decision:

We all agreed with her definition and wrote it down.

Item 4:

Discussion:

Črt formed some research questions. Other members looked at it and we all agreed that these questions cover our topic very good. Katja D. and Nataša discussed that hypotheses could be good for our topic. We will discuss that on our next meeting.

Decision:

We wrote down five research questions.

Item 5:

The next meeting will be held on Tuesday, 26 February, 2008 at 12 AM at FDV library.

Minutes of the 2nd e-meeting »Problem Based Learning Project«

Held on 29 February 2008

Absent: /

Agenda:

1.      Action-item follow up

2.      Distribution of tasks

3.      Literature

4.      Any other business

Item 1:

During the previous week we tried to find all accessible literature and different sources of information, which could be helpful to our project.

Decision:

This assignment was successfully completed. But a lot of work still has to be done; especially regarding methods of our empirical work.

Item 2:

Assignments:

Every member of the group will answer to one question. Except the fourth one because it is complex and will need to be answered by two group members. Nataša will find statistical data and thus provide us with the framework of our work. Rado will tackle the second question and search different reasons for unemployment. Katja K will focus on gender inequality regarding unemployment of sociologists. Because our study involves problem solving, the fourth question will be carried out by Jožica and Katja D. Črt will carry out an interview with a representative of mojedelo.com in order to answer the last question.

Decision:

We all agreed with the distribution of tasks and wrote it in the wiki.

Item 3:

Discussion:

We searched for appropriate literature and made a preliminary list of literature and other sources. We will post the list on our wiki web page.

Decision:

During the following week we will try to check all the collected sources from our current list to see if they are really helpful or appropriate for our project. We will also contact professors Zorko, Uhan, Trbanc, Kramberger and  Tivadar to help us with our project.

Item 4:
