RECYCLING DOMESTIC WASTE IN LJUBLJANA

Definition:

Recycling domestic waste is a very serious problem in Ljubljana. It is one of the steps to solving environmental pollution, which unfortunately is not too successful among the Slovenian population. Consequently, environmental pollution lowers the standard of living of the human race because the environment is one of the factors that affect human life. More than 50% of Slovenian citizens have difficulties with recycling their waste.

Research questions:

1. What impact has waste on the environment? (Nataša)

2.What has contributed to the awareness of waste separation? (Nataša)

3. Who in the population of Slovenians is more separating waste, and why? (Lara)

4. How is the separation of waste spread in Slovenia? (Lara)

5. How do we separate waste? (Teja)

6. Does the introduction of monetary fine for wrong waste separation enlarge people's consciousness? (Teja)

7. Would financial penalties really change people's consciousness or would they consider it just because of the fear of the penalties? (Nina)

8. Why do people not separate the waste? Because they do not know how to do it or they just do not want to? (Nina)

9. Do they have to teach children in school about this problem so they can pass it over to their parents? (Špela)

10. How did the action »Let’s Clean up Slovenia in a Day« help to people's consciousness? Do we need more actions like that? (Špela)

Minutes of the first meeting ''Project Based Learning''

Held on the 23th of February, 2011 via Skype (online meeting)

Present: Nataša, Lara

Absent:

AGENDA

1. Proposing a group name

2. Division of roles

3. Setting a date for the next meeting

4. Discussing sources for assignment

ITEM 1: On the agenda was the discussion about a group name. Since we are expecting some more members we tried to think of a name  that would fit both males and females. First, we wanted to name our group after our mutual favorite color purple but Nataša pointed out that the group may expect some male members who would not agree with a name like this. We were thinking of all sorts of names, from Chocolate Milka to Brown Paper Bags, but then Nataša proposed a name Daydreamers and we both agreed that is a good team name because it has a deeper meaning for both of us and hopefully for our future team mates.

Decision: We decided the name Daydreamers is suitable for both males and females. We hope other members will be daydreamers too and will like the group name.

ITEM 2: We wanted to divide roles for our assignment but we assumed that it is too early to do so since we are still expecting other team members.

Decision: For the next meeting  the whole group will decide who will be responsible for each task.

ITEM 3: Nataša proposed our next meeting to be on Wednesday after class somewhere out of the faculty. We both agreed the meeting should be held out and not in the FDV library so we can discuss our assignment without bothering those who need silent environment to study or read.

ITEM 4: Lara proposed it would be good to go to the library to find literature for our topic. Since we do not know which topic we will work on, we both agreed it is best to wait for the topics. We also agreed on waiting for other members who will help us decide which sources to use. We were also discussing choosing sources from the internet, but we agreed it is best to wait for the topic and then  consider the sources.

Minutes of the second meeting ''Project Based Learning''

Held on the 2nd of March 2011 at 8 pm via Facebook

Present: Nina, Špela, Nataša, Teja, Lara

Absent: /

AGENDA :

1. Discussion and selection of topic

2. Division of roles

3. Selection of literature

4. Any other business

ITEM 1: The meeting was held via Facebook group called ''Angleščina'', created by Nina. The  first thing that needed to be done was a discussion about the  topic of the project. Lara gave a proposal that we could research the extinction of the bees. Nataša thought that we will find more literature and solutions about separating of domestic waste. Nina, Špela and Teja agreed with Nataša, and the group decided to pick Nataša's idea. Our topic will be separation of domestic waste.

ITEM 2: Špela proposed that our amount of work should be equal and the rest of the  group mutually  agreed with that proposal, therefore we decided we will weekly determine the roles. This week, we decided that  Špela and Nina will prepare research questions, Teja will look out for literature, Nataša will prepare a definition and Lara will write minutes. Next time, the roles will be changed  so every member of the group will have a chance to do everything.

ITEM 3:

Decision: The group decided Teja will search for literature. She will search data on the internet and will decide which articles are suitable for our topic and be used later in the solving problem process.

ITEM 4:

Decision: The group decided the next meeting will be held on Wednesday afternoon at our virtual group.

Minutes of the third meeting ''Project Based Learning''

Held on the 9th of March 2011 at 9 pm via Facebook

Present: Nina, Špela, Nataša, Teja, Lara

Absent: /

AGENDA :

1. Distribution of research questions

2. Discussion about contacting people to solve the problem

3. Any other business

ITEM 1: The group discussed who will research each question for our problem. Nataša proposed we should all get two questions to research. The group agreed each member should pick two questions which are most relavant to her.

Decision: Nataša picked questions 1 and 2, Lara 3 and 4, Teja 5 and 6, Nina 7 and 8 and Špela 9 and 10.

ITEM 2: The group discussed who to contact and invite to an interview. Nataša proposed we should contact somebody from the Ministry of the environment and spatial planning and ask him/her to do an interview with us. Lara suggested the group should find a person who is involved in environmental movement. Since our group is focusing on Ljubljana it would be appropriate if we  find  an environmental movement which focuses on environmental problems in Ljubljana. Nina proposed we should search for answers with surveys to observe how and if people recycle domestic waste and if the penalties were higher how would people react on them.

ITEM 3:

Decision: We decided our next meeting will be held next week after english class at our virtual group.

Minutes of the fourth meeting ''Project Based Learning''

Held on the 16th of March 2011 at 9 pm via Facebook

2. Any other business

ITEM 1: Our work group wrote some words in out glossary which are connected with our topic Recycling domestic waste. The glossary are included on our wiki page.

Decision: We chose these words: recycling (= recikliranje; reciklaža), domestic waste (= gospodinjski odpadki), waste separation (= ločevanje odpadkov), waste management (= ravnanje z odpadki), biodegradable waste (= biološko razgradljivi odpadki), hazardous waste (= nevarni odpadki), environmental pollution (= onesnaževanje okolja), rubbish bin (= smetnjak), awareness (= zavedanje), consciousness (= zavest), to reuse (= ponovno/večkrat uporabiti; predelati) and to sort (= razvrščati; sortirati).

ITEM 2:

Decision: The group decided the next meeting will be held on Wednesday afternoon at our virtual group. In the end, all members decided that we can slowly start to shape a report and that we still have enough time to improve it as much as we can.
